Wearing a face mask to prevent the spread of the coronavirus has become a controversial topic in the U.S., with some people even resorting to violence over it. A report has discovered why mask requirements are such sticking point for some: They think these mandates infringe on their rights.
The report, released by the Brookings Institution on Monday, surveyed nearly 5,900 Americans between early June and early July about their mask usage in public. The researchers discovered that 20 percent of those who participated in the survey were not wearing masks in public to stop the spread of the virus, despite state mask mandates or recommendations.
Of that group, 40 percent who dont wear a mask say its because its their right as an American to not wear a mask, while 24 percent say they dont wear a mask because it is uncomfortable.
Its worth noting that 18 percent of those who dont wear a mask say its because they do not have access to a mask, 11 percent say they think the virus is a conspiracy, and 7 percent do not wear a mask because theyre concerned about being viewed as a criminal, with 67 percent of men of color who dont wear a mask citing the latter reason.
The report also found that 64 percent of Americans believe that their right to not have to wear a mask or scarf over their face is more important than reducing the likelihood of contracting the virus or spreading it to others. -----
Mask usage is required by law in 34 states and the District of Columbia, according to AARP.
--- People who claim its their right to avoid wearing a mask are misunderstanding rights, Dr. Amesh A. Adalja tells Yahoo Life. You dont have a right to infect other people.

I clearly remember that fiasco.
When I hit USN Boot Camp the first ‘ABC’ training/instruction convinced me to never ‘trust what an adult says again’.
Also, remember during the 1946 and 1954 ATests the advice for sailors on the main deck was to button shirt sleeves and collars, wear goggles and don’t look towards the blast area.
I have never KNOWINGLY taken a Flu Shot - I say knowingly because in Nov 1957 we set sail from San Diego to Japan etal in the middle of a GLOBAL PANDEMIC called the ‘Asian Flu’.
Granted my memory a tad ‘fuzzy’ but I am sure I would have recalled ANY of this BullSchiff they are foisting on us today had they tried it then.
Wear a mask? No.

Where are the proper disposal bins?
What happens to the masks that just end up in the landfill?
This is what we should PUSH...
It will die on the vine like the asbestos clean up fiasco...when it started to cost more to tear down a 2 story house with a dirt floor basement because of ‘asbestos’ than it did to build the 5 story high rise to replace it, saner minds took over and the Schiff came to a halt.
Both my parents were RNs and I was raised in the 40s/50s, at the tail end of the TB and beginning of Polio.
Since both worked in sanitariums I would imagine I had more than my share of ‘exposure’ to both.
According to the original ‘guidelines’ for the beerflu, I am DEAD. I still do the same routine as before, this 6 foot distancing is great as I mostly practiced it before anyway and though I do have a VERY legitimate excuse to NOT wear one, I seriously doubt I would have fallen in line either.
Yes, the flu was here before, I would imagine ALL the asbestos isn’t gone and life goes on.
Like the old chestnut about guy going to Dr and being told to cut down on his bacon and egg inpug.
Guy told the Doc about his grandfather and his 4 egg 1/2 pound of bacon every day of his life and he lived to be 104.
DR: “Well, maybe so BUT that was before we knew about cholesterols”
Inquiring minds want to know .....
Have they studied why people don’t use Chain Link Fencing instead of screening to keep flies and mosquitos out of their house??
I just seen a new stat today...
If youre between the age of 50 and 64, the chances of you catching and dieing of Covid is 1 in 19.2 Million...
I choose not to wear a mask...
Well stated.
“Everyone” is one of most dangerous words in our language. Use with extreme caution.
If experts were experts they would know that masks cannot stop a virus nor that it will stop at 3ft in europe and at 6ft in the USA. I just call these experts liars.
The experts are wrong.
We have zero evidence that the mask stops a virus. Your comparison makes no sense.
Amen!
When I HAVE to wear one, its usually warming my chin. Yea, doesnt make sense in summer. Even if its covering my mouth Im still breathing through the nose. Yes I know what its connected to. And even then, if I need to speak to someone, I pull it down so I can speak freely. I hate mumbling and I dont like to yell. And yelling and still sounding mumbled, drives me nuts.
Alyssa Milano says; “Wear your mask!”
Thank you for the laugh. It's sad when a grade schooler is that much more aware than an adult "teacher" and your dad's comment is priceless. I may have to borrow that line.
"Don't scare the civilians, they believe the government."
Or "Brookings."

That’s totally false. There is plenty of evidence in most states with students party time before college begins and now a spike in new covid admissions to hospitals.
Masks make a difference. Bottom line. You have a problem with wearing a mask? Stay out of most places of business in Arizona. I can’t believe people like you can’t see the death tolls on the rise in most locations where less than a month ago Party Hearty without a mask folks are in hospitals. Good luck without your mask.
I ain’t wearing no Northam face napkin. Anyone at high risk needs to stay home.
