While this column isn't about the threat posed by Transformers, it is about a robot apocalypse that's going to ravage the Midwest. I know, I know, the last thing you want to hear about right now is another imminent doomsday -- aren't global warming and COVID-19 and murder hornets and measles and the ever-present specter of thermonuclear war and the possibility of hyper-intelligent toilet lampreys enough?
Well, it's likely you haven't heard too much about this particular apocalypse because it's not a sexy blood-and-guts kind. Instead of armies of Terminators hunting down handfuls of survivors for their sweet sweet spinal fluid, it'll look like this:
AHHHHHHHH!
Driverless semis.

Robot Trucks Will Soon Screw Up The U.S.A. (And Nobody’s Talking About It)

It will end poorly. While auto assisted trucks could be useful, in terms of providing efficiencies and allowing drivers to work a full 14 hours days, I do not believe they can fully replace drivers.
At least they won’t need little white pills and dodge the scales alright.
The electronic logbooks won’t be way behind. Just a few seconds to minutes depending on signal strength and availability.
Great writing but cant suffer through their website... too many open windows. Sheesh. Cant they just let a guy read an article.
We will always need people like Will, Sonny, BJ McKay pushing rigs.
Over the flatlands and wide open stretches, the automated semi would be great.
Nothing can screw up the USA anything like the left their party the Democrats can. The greatest achievement of the Democrats is bringing together most of the most negative, dangerous, and incompetent people all under the same tent.
I can see a need to alleviate some driving over the plains, where a driver can relax when he sees nothing before him fir miles and miles. Where he can, while keeping an eye on the road, also attend to his needs to make a small meal or just stretch out and take short naps.
I don’t believe AI can replace the driver. I do not believe AI has the ability to deal with unexpected things, like an incoming driver who has crossed lanes or ice and snow.
Im all for Robot Trucks. You could call them Autobots.
A,couple of years ago on I77 around Columbia, SC while I was driving, two rigs were southbound.
One was BJ McKay’s and the other the one from Smokey and the bandit.
I guess heading to a show or large event somewhere.
So, this guy thinks that only New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Atlanta will have jobs.? I want what he,s smoking
Dedicated lanes for them and it would work .
But I cant see how todays infrastructure would let them work
That’s a good little movie.
I live how the film speed was run up.
[[[Thats a good little movie.]]]
Yep, with the lovely Peggy Cummins. RIP
Loved her in “Gun Crazy” too.
Knight Rider type AI is decades away probably, if ever.
KITT was compromised more than a few times. A rogue AI semi would be ugly.
I think we need more trains.
I haven’t seen it in years. Probably have it scarfed from YT.
Those 50s and 60s British shows and movies had a lot of pretty women.
Nuclear powered 200 mph capable like 70s Supertrain.
