Weekly Garden Thread - August 15-21, 2020
August 15, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 08/15/2020 6:21:55 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Our son owns a commercial building with 2 shop units that he rents to the family business and a small office with a handy bath room that he let’s us use ...

You should see the size and number of the Grow Houses the dopers build and use around here. 30,000 plant grow were seized in one raid this week

That makes sense. I will probably drain the brine off in a few days and put the peppers in a blender and strain for my hot sauce. Then add a vinegar base and see how that works.

I’m loving it! This is my second season using it.

Getting ready to start fall crops to grow in there until they can’t take it anymore. (It’s unheated - this is my year to experiment!)

A greenhouse was part of the ‘deal’ if I sold my farm, left my greenhouse behind, ‘retired’ from Jung’s, got engaged to Beau and moved to his farm. Though it took him five YEARS to convince me that ‘all of the above’ WAS going to happen, can this guy close a deal, or WHAT? ;)

Nothing better than supper straight from the garden! I had a BLT for supper. :)

I made a Balsamic Glaze the other day; had never had it before. I was impressed - and I’m not easily impressed!

I’m reading Ree’s latest cookbook like a NOVEL - it’s so good!

My first two tomatoes went into my first batch of fresh salsa this year...each year, I tweak the recipe to see if I can make improvements, but I may have finally hit the ceiling with this batch...YUM! There is a commercial kitchen nearby, so I could put it in local stores, but other people just aren’t worthy.

“...so I could put it in local stores, but other people just aren’t worthy.”

I take that as a CHALLENGE!

Should we have a Salsa Recipe Competition?

I’ll show you mine if you show me yours!

(I’m talking about the RECIPE, you filthy animals, LOL!)

My recipe has that certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ that just can’t be duplicated.

I’ll still share:

Diana’s Too Many Tomatoes Salsa

10 cups tomatoes, seeded and chopped
1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped
1/2 cup diced onion
1 can (4oz) diced Jalapeno chilies*
1 Cup Brown Sugar
1 Cup Wine Vinegar
1 Tbsp. Cinnamon
1 Tsp. Cumin

Simmer tomatoes, pepper and onion for one hour. Add remaining ingredients, stirring well. Simmer for 30 minutes. Cool slightly and puree with immersion blender.

Can or freeze.

*Can substitute as many seeded, chopped Jalapenos as you like. Simmer them with the first ingredients for an hour.

I also like to add a package of frozen corn and a can of black beans in that second simmer.

All that beautiful farmland, and you use chiles from a CAN???

Blasphemy.

Just harvested a load of fingerlings...I'll admit; vodka never crossed my mind. Hmmm...

Returned from an 8 night vacation away from garden.

My son left after I did so he was able to water the garden before he left....result was 4 nights between watering.

Came back to a healthy garden last night and a 30 min watering session using a flashlight in the dark.

Harvested my 1st two large tomatoes......a 7 Oz Black Krim and a 6 Oz Cherokee purple.

Only took a tiny bite/sliver for myself.

Harvested the seeds for next year. Hoping a couple of years more of harvesting the 1st ripe toms for seed will allow to get the date to harvest down 5-10 days.

We have a pretty short season up here in the Seattle area.

By the time I get it down a few days I hope to eacape this beautiful but God forsaken place full of communists.

Zillow and gardeing are my stress relievers.

Plenty of room for Freepers in Wisconsin! (Just avoid Madistan and Milwaukeestan and you’re golden.)

Emptied the rain gauge this morning from yesterday (Saturday) & overnight. The rain measured 3.5 inches. Rainfall is now at 14.37 inches for August. It’s misted off/on today & is quite “cool” & a bit breezy. Now, around 5, it’s raining lightly again & looks like some little showers are popping up. The grass is horrible - hope it will dry out some tomorrow so I can mow the worst parts.

The wildlife is out & about - deer, bunnies, birds, squirrels, baby lizards ... no telling what will show up next.

Very hot for us.

People will be begging for rain and 60 by tomorrow after no sleep from not having AC.

And as I type this....thunder in the sky
