Aviators in a small training detachment aboard the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford were recently counseled by leadership after wearing an unauthorized and inappropriate patch, the Navy said.
Half of the patch, according to a photo on Twitter, included the aircraft carrier's logo with the words "America's Newest Carrier" and "Integrity at the Helm." The other half, however, depicted an image of a bat with the words "China's Newest Carrier," a reference to one theory about the origins of the novel coronavirus.
"The patch in question was inappropriate and not consistent with uniform regulations, which state patches must be appropriate in nature and approved by commanding officers," Cmdr. Jennifer Cragg, spokeswoman for Naval Air Force Atlantic, said in an email Thursday.

... worried about staying in good graces with the CAG ... who now has to stay in the good graces of the political officer
That now inoperable training ship isn’t going to be deployed any time soon, so what’s the fuss?
Unfortunate Timing
These days you never know.
Wouldn’t want to offend the PLAN spy detachment aboard the USS Ford? Sheesh! It’s a frigging cruise patch!
We had em. Called em morale patches. They were fully authorized within our unit and on our aircraft.
I file that one under Divine Comedy.
Mel Brooks may not be able to make a movie these days, but God has never been restricted by terrestrial annoyances such as linear time.
Makes for an interesting plot”line”.
:)
Peacetime generals are limp-wristed, bedwetting politicians that have to be replaced immediately in the event of an actual war (which we have not had for 75 years).
Different Navy than I remember. LOL.
Yeah, wouldn’t want our killing machine drivers to hurt the feelings of our enemies. This is making the Chinese laugh. “If they are even too frightened to UPSET us...LOL.”
That doesnt make it right
Well, I guess we are just going to lose the cold war we’re clearly in with China. Our military doesn’t want to hurt their feelings.
Would be pretty funny to break it out when someone's showing off their coin because no matter how cool the weapon system is on their coin, the Wuhanic Bat Plague causes Armageddon and locks down the entire world (except for rioters) based on fiction.
Inappropriate, but hilarious!
Actually not true. wearing custom patches on flight suits goes back a way. We had them before I retired in 94. Nothing wrong that I can see in that one except that the Navy brass are generally a bunch of political hacks.
Years ago, this sort of thing would have been kept “in house” and the public would never know. Now the world knows if someone didn’t flush on a submarine.
[[Agreed. The patch is great, but members of the military must abide by the uniform requirements.]]
Sikhs forced the military to change their rules abotu military dress codes— I’m sure muslims have or will eventually forced them to change some rules too-
