The fastest-growing black hole in the universe has a massive appetite

(CNN)The fastest-growing black hole in the universe is 34 billion times the mass of our sun and feasts on a meal the equivalent of our sun each day, according to a new study.

This massive, hungry black hole was first identified and studied by researchers in May 2018. Previously, they believed it consumed the mass equivalent to our sun every two days. Now, they have a better understanding of this monster black hole and its gluttonous behavior.

The study published Wednesday in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The black hole is known as J2157 and exists more than 12 billion light-years back in the distant universe. Astronomers are trying to understand how such massive black holes could evolve during the early days of the universe. The researchers continue to search for more massive black holes like this one to understand how they have grown.

"It's the biggest black hole that's been weighed in this early period of the Universe," said Christopher Onken, lead study author and research fellow at the Australian National University's Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, in a statement. "We're seeing it at a time when the universe was only 1.2 billion years old, less than 10 per cent of its current age."

It dwarfs the supermassive black hole called Sagittarius A* in our own Milky Way galaxy.

"The black hole's mass is about 8,000 times bigger than the black hole in the centre of the Milky Way," Onken said. "If the Milky Way's black hole wanted to grow that fat, it would have to swallow two thirds of all the stars in our Galaxy."

Nupe, things that far away tend to be moving at close to the speed of light away from us. Certainly this thing is, as physicists determined its distance from us in the first place by measuring its red shift. And nowadays we can bet our bottom dollar it's moving away from us much, much faster, because... Dark Energy (Hubble's Law of you don't like DE). Not to mention, Physics' rarely mentioned Numero Uno Law: U-turns are not allowed for galaxies and heavy black holes out there near the edge of the observable universe.

Not a fully formed star every day, but the equivalent mass, about 4 million trillion trillion pounds of gas, dust, asteroids, comets, planets and, yes, a star or two now and then. Get that thing some Tums!

Would it work on dust bunnies under the bed? Maybe there’s a business opportunity here. We could put Roomba out of business.

OMINOUS Sweet Black Hole of Death (SBHOD) threatens to destroy Earth and the Universe unless American voters come to their senses and support marxist Democrats who are smarter and can devise a plan like banning all Trump rallies and in-person voting.

Has anyone ever heard the idea that the observable universe might exist inside a black hole?

So let me suggest what that might look like from the outside.

The expansion of such a universe within the black hole might puff it up, make it appear to have a larger event horizon than it actually would just based on its mass alone. Since we infer the mass of a black hole by its size that would make the black hole seem more massive than it actually is to an outside observer.

And inside the black hole? The “universe” within would coincide with the substance of it that was not part of it everywhere. It might “look” like mass or energy that couldn’t be directly seen. You know: dark matter or energy.

I have BS’d today. So no unemployment drachmas from Bea Arthur for me!

Maybe the black hole has consumed 3/4 of the universe by now...only the light from the ongoing event hasnt reached us yet.
Maybe that is where all the dark matter and dark energy is and is why we cannot find any.
