CERN Makes Bold Push to Build $23-Billion Super Collider
Scientific American ^ | June 19, 2020 | By Davide Castelvecchi, Elizabeth Gibney, Nature magazine

Europe’s preeminent particle-physics organization will need global help to fund the project, which is expected to cost at least €21 billion and would be a follow-up to the lab’s famed Large Hadron Collider. The new machine would collide electrons with their antimatter partners, positrons, by the middle of the century. The design—to be built in an underground tunnel near CERN’s location in Geneva, Switzerland—will enable physicists to study the properties of the Higgs boson and, later, to host an even more powerful machine that will collide protons well into the second half of the century.

The approval is not yet a final go-ahead. But it means CERN can now put substantial effort into designing a collider and researching its feasibility, while pushing to the backburner research and development efforts for alternative designs for LHC follow-ups, such as a linear eletron-positron collider or one that would accelerate muons.

The decision comes in a document approved today, called European Strategy for Particle Physics Update. It outlines on two stages of development. First, CERN would build an electron-positron collider with collision energies tuned to maximize the production of Higgs bosons and understand their properties in detail.

Later in the century, the first machine would be dismantled and replaced by a proton-proton smasher. That would reach collision energies of 100 teraelectronvolts (TeV), compared with the 16 TeV of the LHC, which also collides protons and is currently the most powerful accelerator in the world. Its goal would be to search for new particles or forces of nature and to extend or replace the current standard model of particle physics. Much of the technology that the final machine will require has yet to be developed, and will be the subject of intensive study in coming decades.

Several times before. Please tell me the US government isn’t going to buy into this crap.

Screw the euroweenies, hire Musk to do it for two orders of magnitude cheaper, in America.

This video needs less artsy and more fartsy.

I clicked through parts of it, I wasn’t about to watch the full hour-plus. Didn’t seem satanic to me but I’m no expert in theology. It just looked like artsy-fartsy crap to me, nowhere near worth the time.

Since the introduction of the scientific method in the middle ages, most of the early scientists to whom we owe much of our knowledge were Christians. Today's atheists who claim science and religion are mutually exclusive are therefore ignorant. And one of my favorite quotes is by Galileo:

"I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with senses, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use"

I tend to believe quantum mechanics is not something we were generally meant to understand. That doesn't mean we can't try, however.

As a physicist who spent some time in the high energy physics community while at university I have to say this is hilarious.

You don't spend your nights with me
You don't go out with other girls either
You only love your collider.

And then the part where they use the Cray computer [yellow blue thing with benches] as a stage prop

I also found it to be very strange.

Although, I must admit, I don’t see it as disheartening in the least.

The devil will be thrown into the lake of fire, and so will anyone else who refuses to repent, turn from their evil and worship the God who created them.

Artsy-Fartsy - but rather light on the ‘artsy’ :-)

Oh, I think we’re ‘meant’ to try and understand everything.

What I’ve learned from science has always deepened my conviction that there is an Intelligent Design behind the material universe.

Sorry chicken, not turkey.

In an issue of Meat & Poultry magazine, editors quoted from “Feathers,” the publication of the California Poultry Industry Federation, telling the following story:

The US Federal Aviation Administration has a unique device for testing the strength of windshields on airplanes. The device is a gun that launches a dead chicken at a plane’s windshield at approximately the speed the plane flies.

The theory is that if the windshield doesn’t crack from the carcass impact, it’ll survive a real collision with a bird during flight.

It seems the British were very interested in this and wanted to test a windshield on a brand new, speedy locomotive they’re developing.

They borrowed FAA’s chicken launcher, loaded the chicken and fired.

The ballistic chicken shattered the windshield, broke the engineer’s chair and embedded itself in the back wall of the engine’s cab. The British were stunned and asked the FAA to recheck the test to see if everything was done correctly.

The FAA reviewed the test thoroughly and had one recommendation:

“Use a thawed chicken.”

LOL!

That sorta reminded me of “As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly”:

Yes, but the deeper one delves into the workings of the universe, the more one realizes that it is far weirder than we are even capable of understanding. The way an electron can be in several places at once until it “knows” you’re watching it, for example; then changing its behavior to a more mannered one. I do get the sense that there is some profound mathematical harmony to the universe, but we might need planet-sized brains to even begin to grasp it.

I think some of our greatest spiritual teachers, throughout history, have given us some clues.

In this regard, I especially appreciate the Shema of the Jews, which seems to me to speak to an underlying unity/union of all Creation:

“Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God, the LORD is one.”

People seem to think it simply means that there is only one God, as opposed to a multitude of gods. I think there’s a lot more to it than that.

John 10:30 I and my Father are one.

Genesis 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil

Could God be everywhere at once? Absolutely.
