It has been for decades! Or at least many parts of it. I am lucky to have a DVD with ALL of it, in all its ‘political incorrectness’.

I guess that I must be a racist since I sing in a choir that recorded a version of this Spiritual. At the time of our recording this piece, we had two Black Canadians in the choir. Are they racist also?

We also tried a number of other Spirituals including ‘Deep River’. Not many verses but VERY powerful piece of music.

So what happens if the fans start singing the hymn. will the game be cancelled? A forfeit for whichever team’s fans sing the song? It’s a good chance for the fans to collectively tell the powers that be to get stuffed.

>>Prince Harry follows Meghan Markle’s lead, as a close friend said that her instinct to leave the UK and move to California makes sense to her now.

Wait I thought America was a horrible place.

They will eradicate all memories that slavery ever existed.

Or that people ever sang religious songs of praise.

I am with you. I was exposed to Stephen Foster in elementary school and loved his work. I still play them on the violin. They have a musical quality that is fantastic. I never once thought about them as racial although I was aware that the songs were about the nature of life in the deep South.

I now look at it as I do the appreciation of good wine. And you know when a song sticks in your head all day, like Camtown Races or Swanee River, it is simply good. (You’re hooked).

While they are at it, why not call for the banning of cotton fabric due to its connection to slavery?

Can somebody just please toss them some tea and crumpets and tell them to go away?

Umm ...

We’d sing this song in our Catholic church and school in an Arizona city up in the mountains. We had blacks, whites, indians, mexicans, chinese, some jews (I learned later
- how do you tell?) friends I grew up with.

I’m not sure we were missing any race.

Nowhere in the lyrics is there one mention of cotton or race or slavery or masters. Just because a crowd would sing it, I guess because they liked and thought well of a couple of Blacks (yes I know AAs) on their team so now we need to burn up all the copies and sheet music?

Its a beautiful song and I guess a “Negro” spiritual and now we have to deal with “cultural appropriation.”

What a pile of dog doo.

Is there nothing sacred that the leftists won’t steal from us? Yes I’m pissed because I have a low gravelly frog-like voice and I figure singing this song occasionally might get me into heaven.

;-)

Really wonderful that in SF they tore down Washington’s and Francis Scott Key’s statues last night. The father of our country and warrior that made ours and their freedoms possible and the author of our national anthem.

While the cops and national TV watched. Exactly when do we say that’s enough?

Where is the racist part in this song that says a white guy like me can’t love and sing this song that needs to be banned?

May God help us and the USA. A dimming light of freedom in the world.

Luckily we have President Trump that recognizes this and is working to preserve our freedoms.

Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin’ for to carry me home;
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin’ for to carry me home.
I looked over Jordan,
And what did I see,
Comin’ for to carry me home,
A band of angels comin’ after me,
Comin’ for to carry me home.
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin’ for to carry me home;
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin’ for to carry me home.
If you get there before I do,
Comin’ for to carry me home,
Tell all my friends I’m comin’ too,
Comin’ for to carry me home.
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin’ for to carry me home;
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin’ for to carry me home.
Sometimes I’m up, sometimes I’m down
Comin’ for to carry me home
But still my soul feels heavenly bound
Comin’ for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot
Comin’ for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot
Comin’ for to carry me home.

Amen.

Quite so. In slavery and freedom alike, Black hymns and spirituals express suffering, hope, and yearning for glory in a dignified and inspiring manner that has universal appeal. So how is it racist for a rugby crowd in Britain to sing such a hymn in a respectful manner? In context, it pays tribute to and recognizes the cultural accomplishment of Black America. Some people like the Sussexes though are too stupid to recognize that and talk like unregenerate Confederates objecting to such songs by Whites.

Precisely why I bought my own copy. It will soon be one of the Banned Noisemakers (old Stephen King reference).

My question is, why did this song become popular to sing at English rugby games?
