VITAMIN B12 deficiency produces a number of eerie effects on the body and the type of symptoms you may experience depend on the underlying cause. One common warning sign associated with B12 deficiency caused by pernicious anaemia is a particular sound.

Vitamin B12's impact on the body is brought into sharp relief if you become deficient in the vitamin. Vitamin B12 is a nutrient that helps keep the body’s nerve and blood cells healthy and helps make DNA, the genetic material in all cells. If the body does not get enough of the vitamin, it therefore responds in disturbing ways.

How your body responds depends largely on what is causing your B12 deficiency.

Pernicious anaemia is the most common cause of vitamin B12 deficiency in the UK.

B12 is naturally found in certain foods but pernicious anaemia inhibits your ability to absorb the vitamin from food.

This is because pernicious anaemia prevents the body from making intrinsic factor - a protein made by the stomach and needed to absorb vitamin B12 in the intestine.

There are a number of distinctive signs associated with B12 deficiency caused by pernicious anaemia.

According to the Pernicious Anaemia Society (PAS), one neurological symptom to watch out for is tinnitus.

Tinnitus is the perception of noise or ringing in the ears.

According to Mayo Clinic, tinnitus symptoms may include these types of phantom noises in your ears:

Ringing

Buzzing

Roaring

Clicking

Hissing

Humming

"The phantom noise may vary in pitch from a low roar to a high squeal, and you may hear it in one or both ears," explains the health body.

According to PAS, tinnitus is extremely common in patients with pernicious anaemia and is probably due to slight nerve damage to the brain.

Other symptoms of B12 deficiency anaemia include:

A pale yellow tinge to your skin

A sore and red tongue (glossitis)

Mouth ulcers

Pins and needles (paraesthesia)

Changes in the way that you walk and move around

Disturbed vision

Irritability

Depression

Changes in the way you think, feel and behave

A decline in your mental abilities, such as memory, understanding and judgement (dementia)

Some of these symptoms can also happen in people who have a vitamin B12 deficiency but have not developed anaemia.

How to treat it

Vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia is usually treated with injections of vitamin B12.

There are two types of vitamin B12 injections:

Hydroxocobalamin

Cyanocobalamin

It is worth noting that B12 deficiency can be caused by a lack of the vitamin in your diet.

According to the NHS, you may be prescribed vitamin B12 tablets to take every day between meals if this is the case.

Nope, got plenty of B12, severe tinnitus

I blame it on shotguns, pistols, a Led Zeppelin concert, 2 YES concerts, a KISS show, ELP, nothing to protect my ears.....

I have pulsatile tinnitus from a head injury. for over 10 years and for the rest of my life I will hear every one of my heart beats until I die. It’s quite entertaining?
it’s only in the right ear. But even when I feel fine I will hear palpatations and that’s always good for a laugh :-)

Not often. Had all the heart tests

doctor says it only happens like once a month ignore it

My sister has pernicious anaemia and is B12 deficient..she is currently 29 weeks pregnant(Starting her 30th week tomorrow) her B12 number is 412 but that is due to her getting shots every month..she can eat all the good foods with B12 and it makes no difference, she is deficient due to the pernicious anaemia she has..I dont believe she has ever said a word about having ringing or humming sounds I will ask her about that

if anyone gets the clogged ear problem I finally discovered what it probably is and what works

I thought it was wax in the ear and tried all kinds of things to get it out

turns out the most likely cause is was it called

Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

I ran across some people talking about what worked for them online. I tried it. It works for me

Vitamin A and Zinc. I took it every other day. I think vitamin A was 8000 mg.

I dont take it all the time.

When the problem comes back, I start in again and it clears it up.

If it is not ETD, whatever it is...it is cured with Vitamin A and Zinc for me.

Try magnesium, too. I got tinnitus really bad from a concert after 9/11. Magnesium pills resolved the issue.

Heh.

I started out in the Marines as an assaultman (0351).

Rifle ranges, firing the LAW Rocket, demo ranges, and mostly just used to ol’ quick fix of cigarette filters in my ear holes for noise protection.

I have no issues with my hearing, except when watching TV or talking to people.

I cannot stand the constant loss of 20% of my hearing. I have tried all of the stuff that Y’all have suggested but it still drives me nuts.
