Tesla hacker unlocks Performance upgrade and acceleration boost at a discount
Electrek ^ | 10 June 2020 | Fred Lambert

For a few years now, Tesla started selling vehicles with upgradable software-locked capabilities, like 75 kWh battery pack software-locked at 60 kWh or higher power outputs enabled through software updates.

The most recent example is offering a $2,000 ‘Acceleration Boost’ for the Model 3 Dual Motor.

Now André has launched a new company, Ingenext, to offer those performance upgrades to Model 3 owners at a lower cost.

Ingenext’s pitch is that instead of paying $2,000 for Tesla to unlock capability that is already in your vehicle, you buy their system for $1,100 and you get the new acceleration boost and a few other goodies.

They are offering features that Tesla already offers, but they are unlocking them at a discounted rate. To be fair, they are also adding a few things on top of it.

Such unlocks have existed for years on Teslas.

Maybe the Tesla upgrade covers the warranty for what you’re doing to the motor?

I’m sure the “discounted” hack violates your entire warranty.

Sort of a Tesla “jailbreak.”

Yup. Do they think Tesla isn’t tracking exactly how their autos are being used? Sensors, instrumentation, data processing and data logging are so cheap that they can track everything — all for later “maintenance” uses, of course.

Back in the day IBM offered two versions of their mainframe. One slower and much less expensive.

People would buy the slower ones and often discover that they were too slow.

But for a chunk of cash they would upgrade the slow mainframe to the fast model.

A tech would swap out identical boards with different part numbers, install a version of the OS without wait states, and flip a well concealed switch to speed up the CPU.

The fellow I learned this story from had been an IBM tech who used to flip the concealed switch on slow machines without being paid to. He said other techs would often flip it back.

Tesla auto’s are really pretty simple. All the high tech and is done up front in R&D. Beyond the battery there isn’t any exotic materials or complex machining.

Electric motor’s are dead simple compared to Internal Combustion engines and there is not super complicated automatic transmission.

It’s pretty much a racket and Musk knows it.

How long do you think it will take Tesla to alter their software to make this hack obsolete? While current users would be fine, new buyers won’t be able to activate the hack.

That’s why you don’t start a big public business to do this, you just do it for cash under the table and let the Tesla owners spread it through word of mouth.

“How long do you think it will take Tesla to alter their software to make this hack obsolete?”

As long as they are engaging in this business practice, there will just be another hack.

So either Tesla keeps trying this strategy and keep losing money on it, or they come up with a better business practice. Either way, it’s a win for the consumer.

Reminds me of one of my first PCs that had a “Turbo Boost” button on the front with a little light that went on and was supposed to speed your CPU up to 11 mhz or something. Of course as soon as we unboxed the thing, we pressed that button and left it on forever!

So Tesla, like Apple, can simply do a program tune on your vehicle and control your performance?

Great way to get trade ins, people to sell their cars as in later years they become sluggish or inefficient.

Good grief, no thanks...

Turbo boost played a role for gaming, as many earlier games were not CPU speed independent enough to be playable on a machine much faster than it was programmed for.

I would expect to see some kind of hardware key being implemented to go along with the software. A pure software fix is unlikely.

“Beyond the battery there isn’t any exotic materials or complex machining.”

If that were true, why is Tesla still the acknowledged leader in the field?

Tesla designs its own chips currently manufactured by Nvidia, but now moving into its own chip fabrication.

“In this latest video, Munro explains why Tesla’s electric motors are so superior to those of the theoretical competition. “They’ve got magic,” he says. “The electric motor is smaller and lighter than everybody else, but outperforms everybody.” He even shows us a little magnet used in Tesla’s motors - it’s the size of a camera battery, but it includes some astounding technology that gives it super-high performance.”

Take some time and watch some of the Munro Tesla teardowns.

Notice that the euros have yet to move ahead, and unlimited spending.

Chips and such is not machining and manufacturing.

They made the damn things in tents.

Before long, you’ll just get a kit and make it in your garage.

It is said, there is no such thing as bad publicity.

Did they spell ‘TESLA’ correctly?

Also, they may want to totally crush any poachers in a very public way?

The farmers have been fighting similar problems for years, with equipment manufacturers requiring factory service for minor work.

Ah, so I was supposed to turn that off to play older games that were too fast on my CPU? Basically a hardware version of “MoSlow” then.
