We're still opportunistic feeders, and the ancestors used cooperative hunting; add in maneating wolves etc (not atypically, maneating predation results from geriatricity and/or chronic coniditions and injuries)...

That might be one of the reasons dogs were domesticated. If things got lean, it’s still better for tribe morale if fido goes in the stew pot before grandpa or grandma.

Dog ain't bad, neither. Greasy, I'll admit, but you'd be surprised how delicate the flavour is, especially when you're starving
