I’ve heard that he was a drunk from some,and others say he had a small problem when he was out West.
Most of my knowledge points to the latter.

Your right..Grant drank out of boredom. That is about it in a nutshell. BTW, so did nearly every single other military people on those posts, those days.

And it only took a couple and he was tipsy. The whole thing was a slime brought on by his opponents, mostly the news media.

The greatest military commander ever in this countries history.

Want to know were the real vile people in that war? It was Halleck and his political hacks. Many of those Generals on the federal side were political appointees.

When Lincoln was warned that Grant was a drinker, he asked what whiskey he preferred and offered to send a case of it to each of his generals. Grant made it acceptable for functioning ,competent alcoholics to have their place in American culture and business.
