At least 60 people have died from bad liquor in three states in the past three weeks
Thirty-four people died after drinking tainted alcohol in Puebla and Morelos on Mothers Day, local authorities report.
In Chiconcuautla, Puebla, the mayors office declared a health emergency and the National Guard was deployed to help identify others who may be showing symptoms of poisoning.
The 20 who have died thus far in the community drank refino, an agave distillate similar to mescal which costs 15 pesos a liter or 5 pesos a glass and may have been tainted with excessive levels of methanol.
Typically used in solvents and antifreeze, methanol can metabolize to formaldehyde and formic acid in the liver and become toxic within a few hours of being ingested.
Symptoms included dizziness, blurred vision or blindness, difficulty breathing, seizures and severe abdominal pain.
The mayors office appealed to the public to avoid consuming alcohol, asked those experiencing poisoning symptoms to seek immediate medical attention and announced that a full investigation would be conducted.
Meanwhile, 14 people died in the municipalities of Axochiapan and Jonacatepec, Morelos, after drinking tainted bootleg alcohol, reported Pedro Enrique Clement Gallardo of the states Civil Protection agency.
In Telixtac, a small, indigenous community in Axochiapan, authorities closed stores illegally selling the alcohol, despite coronavirus dry laws, and seized 86 liters of what is known locally as cachorro, amargo or damiana after nine people died. Five others died in Jonacatepec where the sale of alcohol was also prohibited due to the pandemic.
Civil Protection warned that the number of poisonings and dead could increase as the investigation continues.
In Jalisco at least 28 people have died since April 26 from drinking El Chorrito, cane alcohol tainted with methanol, and seven have died in Yucatán after drinking bootleg liquor.
Nothing could be worse than Cuzano Rojo!
Alcohol prohibition brings out the bootleggers. And, what does alcohol prohibition have to do with the virus, anyway?
Attention everyone: Don’t drink the agave or drop the brown acid.
“The brown strychnine has been cut with acid.”

Libationes mas fina!
“Symptoms included dizziness, blurred vision or blindness, difficulty breathing, seizures and severe abdominal pain.”
Those are the EXACT symptoms I have when Tequila is involved! Plus, my clothes fall off. ;)
Prayers Up for those poor souls. I’m sure NO ONE was wishing Mom or Grandma THAT kind of outcome on Mother’s Day. :(
Something I did not know until this year is that when Moonshiners would run a still, they would throw out the first gallon or so of product because the methanol comes out of the batch first, and the first gallon or so is always contaminated with methanol.
Methanol is always a byproduct of distillation, and it has to be dealt with by the big alcohol producers as well as the little ones. These people in Mexico either didn't know about methanol, or just didn't care.
“15 pesos a liter or 5 pesos a glass and may have been tainted with excessive levels of methanol”
They say this as if some level of methanol in liquor is OK.
The Mexican peso is 0.041 United States Dollar. 25 pesos to the dollar. That’s some very cheap liquor.
Not even Seagrams or Popov make liquor that cheap.
60 cents a liter.
It never, and I mean NEVER pays to drink cheap liquor.
Hello. Alcohol is a poison. If your are going to imbibe, you need to know this. When you use that as a starting point, make sure you consume the poison from someone who knows what they are doing. And are aging it in oak casks for 12 to 21 years....
Don’t eat or drink anything from China OR Mexico!

Known as “Heads and Ends” - this is the first and last bits that come from the distillations run - distillers normally throw this out as contaminated with all sort of nasty chemicals including methanol. Often called Fusel oils
Recently distillers been turning this to hand sanitizers
Sounds like what happens if you eat street food in Mexico!
Good to know! Thanks for informing me.
I don’t care how nice Cancun might appear to be...any Westerner who sets foot in Mexico should have his/her head examined.
I know, that’s why I quit drinking over 20 years ago. 8>)
I definitely never saw the stage show, nor did I see the TV show that was made later. As a matter of fact I had never heard of it until just now. 8>) I see they have an audioonly CD, which I'm guessing are songs from the show?
I’ll take “didn’t care” for $200, Alex...”
The Mexican moonshiners must be trying to give Andrew Cuomo a run for the money in how many people can be killed “by accident”.
“They say this as if some level of methanol in liquor is OK.”
There is. Also for wine and beer.
