Yes, it does seem clear (at least to me) that the case fatality rates are higher in at least some areas hard hit, but not overwhelmed. NYC may be a good example. But I wonder if anyone has actually put together a study, or examined cases where it can be determined that the initial infections were at a high level.
This worries me a bit because as things “open up” I would expect accumulated viral loads to pick up too, in areas / places previously low. OTOH, we CAN’T go on with this level of economic destruction.
BTW, I know that initial IMHE model gets heavy criticism, but, as time goes by, it’s original estimate of deaths with mitigation is looking better and better. :-(
Living quite a bit further north, we deal with that all the time and I agree wholeheartedly.

So right in line with the 20% serious, 5% critical, 2-3% fatalities statistics. No surprise.

The week 18 Clinical Labs data appears to be incomplete: There was a drop in labs reporting from 98 to 67. Prior to that, every week showed an increase, and in the 3 weeks prior we had (W15) - 93, (W16) - 96, and (W17)- 97 labs reporting.
I’d sure like to see the fatalities per week come down faster, but I suspect there is now a large backlog of ongoing severe or critical cases that will take time to resolve, many negatively, even as new cases slow down.

Stored in a dark glass bottle in our fridge. Took 2 adults to hold me down to take that. I wasn’t even 5 yet. Did I mention it was dreadful stuff? They didn’t even TRY to make it palatable like they do with kiddo antibiotics. Dreadful stuff LOL.

The worst I had to take was Cod Liver Oil and Syrup of Pepsin. I guess they didn’t make the pills back then.
When my kids were young, the Pediatrician had us get paregoric —you could sign for it for colic or diarrhea.
Just a drop or two. Nasty stuff. We deliberately did not make it taste good—if the kids asked for it, we knew they were in real pain. One little 3 oz bottle lasted till they were adults. It’s not allowed to have it these days.

There was an anon on 4chan/pol/ -claims to be special under cover agent. He said that China had accidentally unleashed something contagious in Oct. and it was getting out of control. Later on, after Wuhan reports, he posted some additional stuff:
There was a remote village that was quarantined, lots of deaths, and place was bulldozed down-before the Wuhan hit.
He also said that it was a bioweapon and there was an accident while it was being transported and one of the containers was damaged and fell into a river.
LOL - always some tale on /pol/-but the first post about some sort of contagion out of control was posted well before the Wuhan outbreak and referenced October.

Yes, it has been standard practice for Health Departments to do contact tracing and even quarantines. I don’t really object to that.
However, proposals to use technology to scope out contacts in general to me would be like the NSA scooping up all phone calls in case they want to investigate-not good and too easily misused.
Or the proposals for the Clinton Foundation and Americorp to set up a nationwide contact tracing and monitoring system—Forget about it-that’s a no brainer-no way is that gonna fly.
Good info., but I disagree slightly about the homemade masks: A “crafty” person can make a tight fitting (good seal) mask using dense heavy flannel or other suitable material* as the filter material, sufficient to filter out most of most odors* — which is certainly enough to reduce virus inhalation considerably. Then you need some bendable metal (parallel pieces of solid copper wire will work in a pinch), soft closed cell foam strips, silicone adhesive, something for the straps, a sewing machine (preferably), etc...)
*An “odor test” is suggested. A minute after passing gas in a small closed room is great - as a test - hahaha - (H2S is a very small molecule), as is LOW concentration ammonia [as from a household cleaner), but most any “fragrance” molecules are considerably smaller than a viable virus particle. Since short term sense of smell in normal individuals is approximately logarithmic, if you cut the smell by “half”, you cut the throughput by roughly a factor of 10. Take a deep (nasal, of course!) breath to test. Test with the mask on, then remove and see how much stronger the odor is. (This puts you on the conservative side of decreasing odor concentration during your test, and the tendency to acclimate to moderate odors..) Pretesting earlier** with no mask to determine if you can create a fairly stable “odor environment” for a few minutes is also suggested.
**Take a little time to “de-acclimate” B4 running the test with the mask.
Yeah, I know. Having to do this routine stinks. As does wearing masks in the 1st place. (Sorry - couldn’t resist.)
Note that such a mask may restrict one’s breathing a bit. I find it ok for normal activities, but I would not want to run a race with it on. Persons with respiratory issues proceed with caution! Ditto for N95’s, of course. Hot weather & an effective mask is also problematic.
The CO2 issue with moist any effective mask can be minimized by taking moderate rate deep breaths.
All mask handling precautions still apply, of course. Depending on construction quality, delicate or hand washing should be practical. I air dry in the sun, but only as long as needed, as UV is hard on the foam elastic, etc.

I agree and think that’s one of the keys. You get infected, you don’t know it for a while, so you keep taking that train, twice a day, for at least a week after the infection starts (not to mention the subway), so while your body is trying it’s hardest to hold the virus down so your healthy cells have time to ‘prep’ for the huge upcoming ‘war’ against the virus, you are dumping more virons into your body on a daily basis. So when then symptoms do show up, your cells are not nearly as prepared as they could have been - and you pay the price. Same thing for people in hospitals without adequate protective gear.
I do hope people, somewhere, get around to studying this stuff. It’s embarrassing how little we know about viruses, given that we’ve had 100 years to study them since the last, similar, pandemic.
The latest case from Taiwan is kind of scary - read for yourselves:
“On May 7, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced one new confirmed imported case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. Case #440 is an over 20-year-old female who visited Qatar for work in the second half of February. She was diagnosed with COVID-19 on March 10 and received medical treatment in Qatar. After being treated, she was tested negative for COVID-19 twice and returned to her dormitory on April 8.
The CECC reported that the case didn’t show any symptoms when she returned to Taiwan on May 3. She voluntarily reported her previous diagnosis of COVID-19 to quarantine officers at the airport upon arrival. Although she was tested negative for COVID-19 on May 4, she had diarrhea the same day. Health agencies then arranged her medical care and COVID-19 testing on May 5. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 7. The CECC is investigating passengers on the same flight as the case to identify contacts of the case.”
