IRS Stupidity
IRS IR-2020-61 ^ | 1 April, 2020 | NonValueAdded

Posted on 04/01/2020 2:14:16 PM PDT by NonValueAdded

This has got to be the stupidest thing I've heard yet out of our gubermint. First paragraph, last sentence:

"However, some seniors and others who typically do not file returns will need to submit a simple tax return to receive the stimulus payment."

SERIOUSLY??? We're all locking down, seniors are the most vulnerable, and the IRS is going to send them out to file a tax return they otherwise are not required to file??? What nimrod came up with that idea?

The law, as written, defines the stimulus payments as “tax refunds,” and the IRS is the agency tasked with sending the checks out. If the IRS doesn’t know you exist, and/or doesn’t know if your income level entitles you to a stimuluus check, you won’t get one.

I don’t know, I thought the law was to stimulate the economy

Sorry, I was only going by what posted about the law

I am thinking of changing my name to Boeing and collecting a 68 billion dollar check

the stimulus bill tasked the IRS to be the agency to send the checks out and the bill specified two criteria to receive the money:

1. you MUST have a social security number

2. you MUST verify your AGI is less than $75,000

Secondly, the bill provides for direct deposit based on that information having been provided to the IRS via income tax returns, otherwise, hard copy checks will have to be sent out, which will take many more weeks than direct deposit

Thus, the IRS will first take a look at 2019 returns to obtain the necessary information, and then look back at 2018 returns if the 2019 return is available ...

So, until the IRS can develop brand new, alternative methods beside income tax returns, which the IRS has said they have started to do and said it will take a few weeks to get that all set up, IF someone wants their check ASAP, which means direct deposit, and they have heretofore NOT had to file a tax return and/or provide direct deposit information, the ONLY way to do that right now is to submit a simple 1040EZ tax return with direct deposit information, even if taxes are not owed or refunds are not due ... otherwise, there will be a long wait ... this is not because the IRS is incompetent buffoons, but because the stimulus bill dumped all this on them overnight ...

“The IRS is not following the law - the law clearly states that the checks can be issued on social security information only.”

really? not a single other soul has claimed that ... you’ll need to provide a link to that information and/or quote that part of the bill here, otherwise we all can just assume you fabricated all of that ...

“Can I just send a simple post card in to receive a check?”

no. they need to verify your AGI and direct deposit information and the only way for you do that is to submit one of the versions of Form 1040 (and other associated forms if necessary, which btw, you swear under oath is all true when you sign it and send it in ... none of that can happen with a post card, which is the same reason you can’t submit your tax return on a post card ...

Yet I’m certain they will bend over backwards to make sure every single illegal alien gets theirs, and credit for all their dependents, hundreds of them.

"What is a loose job?"

Well, with a quick glance at a couple vintage posters, one can deduce one such job category, anyway.

(By the way, your screen name here brings to mind this great old song:   "Searchin'" - The Coasters, where they talk about you.)      :-)

Are you banking in the U.S. or out of country? If a local bank has your personal info such as SSN, address, phone # and so on...so does the IRS.

Do you want your money?

That’s how you get their money.

When you die the issuance of the death certificate is transmitted to the SS database. They are really good at shutting down checks.

I read that SS would handle all senior payments. So much conflicting info out there.

Gee, I don’t know why everyone says you are a jerk. /S

No. I deal with Seniors who are not required to file all the time. Most are computer illiterate. They’d go to the library to get a form but guess what, the libraries are closed they haven’t filed in years. They don’t even know where to begin. So they are going to go out to get their taxes done. Exactly what we don’t want them to do

You miss my point. We’re talking about seniors who might not have a computer to download a form. They are the ones who will stand in line for hours at the clubhouse waiting for the AARP or VITA volunteers to do their form. They don’t know where to begin. It is a poor design, that will get seniors infected when of all people, they’re supposed to stay isolated.
