A Cruise Ship With At Least 77 People with Flu-Like Symptoms on Board is Heading to Florida
TIME ^ | March 26, 2020 | Sanya Mansoor

A cruise ship carrying at least 77 people with flu-like symptoms on board is on its way to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., according to a statement from the cruise line. The ship, MS Zaandam, intends to arrive in Fort Lauderdale on Monday, March 30 but cruise line Holland America notes that “plans are still being finalized.”snip

Zaandam left Buenos Aires, Argentina on March 7 on a trip that was supposed to end in San Antonio, Chile on March 21 — but that route was disrupted over coronavirus concerns. Holland America announced on March 13 that it would suspend its global cruise operations for 30 days “due to the continued port closures and travel restrictions surrounding COVID-19 and in an abundance of caution.”

Wow! That sounds like our itinerary! Good ideas. Aside from viruses, I have a bum knee that needs replacing. My goal is to be able to do a lot of walking tours.

I know exactly what you mean. Previously we lived near Seattle and did many Alaska cruise sailing out of Seattle or Vancouver in BC. It was convenient. Then for a change of scenery we did a few driving to San Fran to catch a cruise. That was a long & tiring drive. Once in a while we missed the Caribbean, so had to fly from Seattle to Miami then check into hotel for night and cruise next morning. Hated the long flights, which cost almost same as the cruise. Now living in Florida, JAX is 30 minutes drive and cape Canaveral is 95 minutes drive. So convenient, we search for last minute deep discounts.

I went on a cruise just once. It was okay but I don't care to repeat it. It's floating hotel. Stops are at places which CATER to tourists. Overpriced to the max.

BON VOYAGE!

Bring your sanitary wipes.

I believe some of the best data about transmission and close contact comes from the cruise lines’ experience with Coronavirus. The passengers all shared close common spaces and were together for weeks at a time (given they were left waiting at sea/port for a period as well - particularly the Diamond Princess in Japan)

3500 people aboard the Grand Princess to Hawaii. Of the 1,103 passengers from the Grand Princess that elected to be tested, 103 tested positive, 699 tested negative. 2 have died, both aged in their 60s.

3711 people aboard the Diamond Princess (Japan). 634 confirmed cases, a total of 306 and 328 were reported to be symptomatic and asymptomatic, respectively. 7 deaths total.

Tom, as for taking a cruise to anywhere? Take a drive around America pal.

I know what you mean .

I have visited every state in the lower 48 by car.

I am happy to be in, on, under or over the Ocean.
Everyday I go to the shore to see the ocean.
That is one of the reasons I enjoy a cruise. - Tom

Inaugurated during the 2005/2006 cruise season as the first new U.S.-flagged cruise ship in nearly fifty years, Pride of America was designed to pay homage to the spirit of the United States, from the patriotic artwork on the hull to the U.S.-themed public spaces.

There aren’t many cruise ships flaged in this country.

There are some walking tours around St Johns. What will be the status of your knee then?

For Halifax we got a private tour guide with a fan for six of us. He showed us all around Halifax (he’s born in and lives in the area) and out to Peggy’s Cove and back, then a tour of the cemetery with the largest group of graves from the folks retrieved from the Titanic and then we had time in town not far from the ship before time to reboard. Getting a local who knows Halifax and knows the history was well worth it.

If I did that trip again, I’d try to arrange to split my cruise up - getting off at Halifax and staying there awhile and then make the return trip when another cruise was heading back to New York. Halifax is a gorgeous area - to me really represents what I think of when I think of Canada.

Or wish what happened on one of our many Alaska cruises. The ship’s auto-pilot mal-functioned, the ship was place on full throttle speed to maneuver a 90 degree turn (I guess it is a pre-programmed maneuver to avoid colliding head on with another ship heading for you). The ship naked 45 degrees and lot of people who were on top deck enjoying the sunny day got thrown about. Luckily my family was near a staircase so just grabbed the rails and hung on. Next stop was in Vancouver BC, and we saw a dozen ambulances taking injured passengers to hospitals.

To make a long story short, all 4 of us got free cruise vouchers for another cruise on Norwegian. It was great!

All sounds wonderful! Knee has been pushed off indefinitely. Surgeon can’t even schedule electives right now. (My impeccable timing... I also am known for always picking the wrong check out line😀). :(. Hopefully in July or August. Just don’t know.

“We never buy insurance on our 30+ cruises”

We always do. We hate doing it, but we do. For our Feb. cruise the cost was $104/person. Turns out Hubby had to use the medical office for something minor, but it wasn’t a cheap visit. (It was fair, though.) Our medicare supplemental paid 80% of the bill, and our travel insurance paid the remainder. No questions from anyone. It was worth it this cruise. (Of course it still didn’t recoup what we had paid in the past.)

About ten years ago, we had to cancel four days before a cruise because we both had pneumonia. No problem with cancelling through insurance.

Again, we hate to put out the money, but it does give peace of mind.

You are probably doing the right thing. It all depends on health conditions and ages in the family.

Now we do only last minute cruises, so do not need to worry about insurance. Last cruise on Feb 24th we booked like 3 days before because the discount looked good.

“Now we do only last minute cruises,”

When we lived in California we were just an hour’s drive from San Pedro, so could take advantage of the last-minute deals. SO cheap! Kept our “cruise bags” packed and ready to go. Now, in Tennessee, we can’t do that. Every cruise requires flights and excessive planning.
