This is our ongoing prepper thread, re-invented to be more specific to prepping for, and of course during, pandemics.
Where gave you found your preps have withstood this test? What would you like to have done differently? What are your current prepping plans?
As luck would have it, my internet went out today. I’m out in the country, and it could just be it had too much activity with everybody staying home. Or I could be paranoid and think it’s all about me ....
I will read everybody’s post as soon as I can without staying up till midnight. I hope everyone had a good time here and i know there has been informative things posted because Freepers are awesome and Freepers that prep are the best!
I love bacon too, and having canned already cooked bacon bits is so handy.
I tried canning slices bybwraping them in parchment paper, then pressure canning. I’m not thrilled with the result - you get greasy paper, not many pieces of bacon for the waste of parchment and your time, and they last maybe a year. They are only partially cooked so you have to still fry them up. After a year, the fat breaks down and you no longer get slices but pieces.
So I just do bacon bits now - so much easier in the end result last for about 5 years at least. At least that’s how old my oldest jar is :-) I just try up bacon sliced into about an inch square, until about 80% done. Just put them in a half pint jar, with or without the fat. And process like normal for any meat. I had 6 pounds of bacon and got about 12 half-pints that were 3/4 full. They cook down a bit.
You just open and use, they are cooked and ready to go. They’re not real crunchy so I suppose you could fry quickly if you want the crunch. I just add them to things for the flavor.
“Diesel is more stable than gas.”
True. We have green cans to store the diesel in. For the tractor and truck, probably the most important vehicles in a prepper situation.
“Canned ghee, 15 to 20 year shelf life”
Now, that would be amazing.
Aldis sells canned ghee, I might pick some up before doing the canning myself.
You’re added :)
How do you make your origami seed-starting pots?
Sounds like such a great inexpensive way to start seedlings.
I would love the ghee instructions.
I love this way of canning better. Don’t need to pressure or water bath can at all. Sounds like the premise might be the same as dry canning for beans and rice, where you heat them in the oven and then put the lid on and as the air cools it condenses creating a vacuum.
How long does your butter last this way?
I’ve made dried eggs and ghee. I buy them commercially if I want long term storage.
Kartographer posted just a couple of days ago.

I miss his knowledge and willingness to share. Good FReeper!
Thanks, FRiend. We’re in Virginia and the interwebs have been a little jiggy here too. I also think it may be overloaded since everyone is home and streaming
I keep thinking I should take photos of the process and post an Instructable, but I need to find my camera again first. I put it somewhere safe :/
This website comes the closest: https://www.hometalk.com/2039196/origami-paper-seedling-pots-from-newspaper
The main difference is that I keep the pages rectangular. On the step where it says to fold into thirds, I use the corner of the extra side as my measuring point. I’m not sure the best way to describe that. I’ll try to find my camera again so I can show it.
Thanks, that would be really neat. I hate spending money on little seed planting thingies since they are not reusable.
Dried eggs and ghee, like scrambled eggs?
Just to check it out, I cooked scrambled eggs and then dried them. Do a search for more details
We are learning the ropes.
Mr mm and DS are like kids in a candy shop between the new tractor and the Polaris Ranger.
Whatever keeps them happy.
At least there shouldn't be any problem getting the firewood replenished for next winter.
I do toasted pumpkin seeds that way. Toast them and heat the jars and lids and while everything is hot, put the pumpkin seeds in the jar and seal it up.
How well do they reconstitute?
Or do you use them in other cooking?
They were ok reconstituting. I saved them dry for a couple months before using. My wife does not partake in my experiments with food. In fact, I make a lot of regular food she doesn’t eat:) I try things out just because:)
Long term storage, freeze dried in the can. They do make smaller cans of freeze dried egg.
“At least there shouldn’t be any problem getting the firewood replenished for next winter.”
LOL, with those fun toys I imagine they’ll be excited to run out to the forest and get to play. The guys around here love it when a tree falls on the Holler Road or something, everybody gets their tractor and or chainsaw and runs out there, excited as kids.
