March 23 (Reuters) - An Arizona man has died and his wife is in critical condition after they ingested chloroquine phosphate - an aquarium cleaning product similar to drugs that have been named by President Trump as potential treatments for coronavirus infection.

The couple, in their 60s, experienced immediate distress after swallowing the drug, an additive used at aquariums to clean fish tanks, according to Banner Health Hospital in Phoenix.

Chloroquine phosphate shares the same active ingredient as malaria drugs that President Trump has touted as possibly effective against COVID-19, the potentially life-threatening disease caused by the coronavirus.

I’m currently on Hydroxychloroquine or commonly called Plaquenil (200 mg x 2/day) for CREST syndrome (Rheumatoid/Scleroderma). It has worked very well for me and I hope it is the medicine we need to combat this virus. It has been reported when given with azithromycin [Z-Pak] it limits the respiratory injury brought on by COVID-19.

Actually: they might well be the same substance. It seems to be common to leave the salt off the end when referring to these things.

Perhaps some FReeper will post the stoichometry. But in the meantime let’s not be caught out. They might be the same substance, but the dose is the poison.

Reuters deliberately trying to making it look like the proven malaria drug killed the couple.

Reuters and many others running the same headline too!

Fish tank cleaner. I hardly believe the president instructed people to poison themselves. Good freaking grief...

Using an aquarium cleaner is not taking a carefully manufactured pill.

***chloroquine phosphate - an aquarium cleaning product similar to drugs***

It isn’t pure for aquariums and has other materials and dosage is suspect because of the lack of purity.

He didn’t die from the virus, so it worked. /s

After decades of safe use for malaria...hazarding a guess, I’d say don’t swallow aquarium cleaner.

The headline is so stupidly TDS!

No it’s the same as the drug. Chloroquine Phosphate.

BUT who knows what other ingredients and more importantly how much drug was in there? Recommended dosing is about 1 gram/ day.

One of the potential deadly side effects of the drug is a sudden fatal cardiac arrhythmia. Greatly increased when taken with other drugs that increase the QT interval.

In my opinion, the headline should be “The FDA ‘protects’ adult Americans from access to medicine, so they die trying to improvise.”

Dramatically misleading headline here. HCQ is as different from Chloroquine Phosphate as HO is from H2O.

“...They might be the same substance, but the dose is the poison....”

True enough, but that headline is intentionally misleading and malevolent; by now, ALL the media knows that the French have been extremely successful with the chloroquine in treating this virus.

We have a President working overtime to get a proven cure out to people, and an entire political party and their media toadies doing everything they can to stall it, to destroy the economy, cause pain and havoc to peoples’ personal finances, and ruin the country.

Hell, this is the same as domestic terrorism to my mind - using fear to collapse the economy, intimidate people, and influence the election.

So now, the lawyers can sue........ that is what the whole flap is all about.

The President was alluding to the fact he would not allow law suits. Dr Fauci was declaring that the prescribing doctors were liable

The issue is now moot because the FDA approved the drug

Reuters is CCP propaganda.

I’m sure they know well the difference between hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine phosphate, or at least enough to know how intentionally false the headline is.
