COVID-19 mortality twice as high for men in Italy as women

Coronavirus mortality rate is twice as high among men in Italy as it is among women, marking a "concerning trend," Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House's coronavirus task force coordinator said during a Friday briefing.

"Mortality in males seems to be [twice higher than] every age group of females," Birx said, adding that no age group or gender is immune, and that mild symptoms are not equivalent to immunity.

627 people died from the virus within 24 hours in Italy on Friday (yesterday).

Wednesday, only 2 days before, Italy reported 475 deaths in one day from the COVID-19. Italy’s population is more than 5 times smaller than the population of the U.S.A.

It would probably be best to avoid being too gleeful about that report from Italy. This one is from a few days ago.

"Basic demographic information from local health authorities -- age, gender or both -- is available for 42 of the deaths. Among those, at least 24 were women and 18 were men...In the U.S., of the cases for which there is data, only one person who died was in their 40s, while two people died in their 50s. Seven people were in their 60s, nine people in their 70s, 13 people in their 80s and 10 people were in their 90s."

Some illogical individuals have been hysterically blaming anyone who posts information about the epidemic and making claims that openness about the disease causes losses of freedoms. But censorship and lax policy for controlling the epidemic is what leads to the following.

99+% of the italians who died were old and/or had other serious medical conditions.

Nope not saying that.

I'm saying something much less nefarious - and independent of whether the cause of the virus was a sh*thole commie wetmarket or something else.

I'm just saying that the unfolding of the administration's reaction to the reality of the virus ... that of course some of what comes up day to day IS the result of day to day changes, but that the spread, the RO stats, the death stats -> these numbers were calculated within a reasonable range of certainty probably a month ago based on the behavior of the virus in China and then as it spread, but before it significantly had infected the US.

If that's true, then you had the best statisticians working on this 6 - 8 weeks ago predicting what we're seeing now, including the numbers that they knew would overwhelm hospitals, and so they would have been devising 2 paths of solutions. One would have been the 'flatten the curve plan' and the second would have been how the hell they were going to deal with it in terms of the economy and in terms of health care.

I'm saying that what's being rolled out day to day is the playing out of one of the scenarios within the continnum of the range of scenarios they predicted. What's happening is NOT outside what any statistician could have foreseen.

I'm just a dopey citizen and I dumped all my stock and bought a gun and prepped up before the stock market started dropping - not long after the sleezy senators.

So I'm saying: 1. It didn't take a genius to know it was going to hit here as an epidemic. 2. The government WOULD HAVE HAD a ton of genius's running models. YES the climate models are BS, but THIS kind of modeling is based on reasonably fewer and controllable variables. 3. So therefore I'm just concluding: That for the good of the country, the government came up with a plan - somewhat flexible because they couldn't predict every event of how it would unfold, but the could predict how it would unfold - the likely numbers and likely effect on the stock market / economy. 4. So they said 'OK, well, what do we have to do to prevent the healthcare and general structures from being overwhelmed' 5. And they said 'OK well, we're not going to run out there here in early March and just announce that we're going to have to implement some serious government control because everyone would panic and there's be a shiite show 10x the panic that lots of freepers are mocking. 6. So they decided 'we need to introduce political leaders and the citizens to this gradually, one day at a time'

No big conspiracy here ... I'm just saying -> they are not making this up day to day.

And that's just one guys opinion. But I really couldn't believe the day many many weeks ago I decided to buy a gun and got up and went to the store at 6am because I figured there'd be lines at the gun store ... that there were no lines, and when I asked the guy at the gun shop if it had been crazy he just looked at me funny, and nobody was stocking up on food, and nobody was talking about their investments.

I wasn't panicked ... just doing what seemed like 'well, looks like this is coming our way so better get this, this and that.

That's all. US government would have seen this train coming and planned for it. NOT because of whatever originated the virus, or because they knew before the virus stated that it would be started, but because there was so much time to observe the virus before it got here.

PS I'm not saying "I KNEW it would be like this" ... I'm saying there was enough evidence to suspect this was VERY LIKELY or at least a one in three chance of happening, hence you would prepare for it. The US govt probably knew it was MOST PROBABLY going to be like this. Why would we be any different in terms of numbers from Wuhan once it got here, which surely it would?

It's actually playing out exactly as the numbers would have predicted long before our first detected case. In some ways I was surprised it took so long, but in part I think that's because with an exponential curve like this, ... well exponential curves start out really really slow and then bang, they take off like a rocket. But it's not because anything changed ... it's just doing it's exponential thing and not even breaking a sweat.

Could you please present the "pure mathematics" and "statistics" upon which you based your conclusion?

I didn't actually do the math -> you didn't have to. If you watched the growth in Wuhan it was kind of intuitive, plus add the lying factor to China and you would have said 'this could be a mess.'

I'm not in the government, I'm sure they had access to better numbers and actual statisticians that could calculate things to within whatever degrees of standard deviations was appropriate.

Hey - also I'm just thinking out loud. Using the term 'Pure' with math/stats is a way of saying you had figures coming out of wuhan. If I recall, the Johns Hopkins map was up a long time ago, I don't remember exactly when, but numbers were being published either there, or here and there in the news.

So if you're not chilled out ... please chill out. I'm making a conversational ... commentary ... or guess as to how the administration experienced this thing as it was happening.

There was enough pattern long ago to say 'well, gee, if you start that pattern HERE, or anywhere, and it's a virus so it probably will affect all people mostly if not exactly the same, it's probably going to behave the same when and if, but probably it will ... get here.

And it's entirely possible I'm wrong. Much of what we post here is intelligent (sometimes not) conjecture.

But if you say 'could you please present' I say to you this: I bet if you go back and look at the numbers coming out of China day to day, before it really went anywhere else, you could put an approximate rate of infection on it. Once you've done that, and if you assume it started with one or maybe a few people, you have a PATTERN which can be reduced to a NUMBER that is a multiplier. That is MATH. That's what I'm getting at. The NUMBERS may not be PURE but the MATH is PURE.

I personally did zero math, or better stated, my multiplier was 'this looks like a shiite show that's repeatable wherever it lands.'

Why you harshin' on my mellow dude? :-)

PS the damn curves in every single country are the same, except that some countries handled it differently or have different population distributions and cultural habits. But had each country done nothing differently, and if you adjust for how crowded any area is ... the curve is the same.

If you plant a daisy seed from over there to over here, you're going to get ... a daisy. That's pure math and biology. But you don't have to do any math or know any biology to know a you're gonna get ... a daisy as long as there is soil sunlight and water. Soil, sunlight and water to this thing is 'people.'

Those in the older age group were heavy smokers which contributed to their preexisting conditions. More men smoked than women. Their smoking habit was over many years. To add to their vulnerability is the decline of their immune system. Also, some were taking drugs to suppress their immune system so that their body would not reject implants made necessary by their tobacco and alcohol use. It is ironic that Italy with its single-payer system had a large population of people with poor care of their own health.

About a week ago, some Italian results indicated 95-percent of victims were over the age of 70. One out of three victims had blood pressure medication going on, and one out of three had some form of diabetes.

Same numbers game going on in Germany.

793 deaths in Italy today. So far.

Italy is getting hammered today. Unless the Chinese are lying about their data (which they probably are) Italy has surpassed their death total by 1200.
