As coronavirus anxieties skyrocket, will audiences avoid movie theaters?

Things change fast in the time of coronavirus. But as public spaces closed down this week across the country over fears of the viral pandemic, moviegoers were still buying tickets to see the latest new releases, albeit at softer numbers than expected.

Going into the Friday the 13th weekend, audiences will keep last week's box office winner "Onward" at #1 as three new wide-release challengers enter a precarious frame.

The well-reviewed animated adventure will handily win the top slot in its second week according to early industry projections following Friday matinees. Still, the Disney and Pixar title is estimated to see a 55% drop off, and is expected to take in $17.5 million this weekend compared to its $39.1 million opening.

An unpredictable weekend faces the first releases to open stateside following the sharp escalation of the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. this week.

In the last several days, many studios took decisive measures to move or postpone their highest-profile spring blockbusters as coronavirus fears mounted stateside, including MGM's Bond film "No Time To Die," Paramount's "A Quiet Place Part II," Universal's "F9" and Disney's "Mulan."

“Dr. Gregory Poland, a Mayo Clinic infectious diseases and vaccine specialist, says that the threat of the coronavirus is real, but the seasonal flu still remains a bigger issue for most people.

“Right now, seasonal flu is causing many more deaths than COVID-19, and the tragedy is that many people die because they consider it ‘just the flu,’” says Dr. Poland.”

AMC just sent this out:

Earlier today, AMC announced our detailed plan to ensure a clean and healthy movie-watching environment for you at our U.S. theatres. Most importantly, we have taken bold nationwide action to encourage “social distancing.”

LIMITING SEAT CAPACITY IN EVERY AMC AUDITORIUM

• To give you more empty space around you within our theatres, we are capping ticket availability to 50% of the normal seating capacity for every showtime in every auditorium at all AMC theatres nationwide. Once we hit 50% of an auditorium’s capacity, movie screenings will show as being Sold Out, even though by definition there will be a large number of unfilled seats. This will begin Saturday, March 14, and for now, will continue until April 30.

• For those AMC auditoriums with more than 500 seats, we will further reduce bookings to a maximum of 250 people in any case.

• And, it goes without saying that AMC is actively complying with all current and future federal, state and local authorities’ directives on social gathering.

ENHANCED THEATRE CLEANING

• AMC theatre teams are following AMC’s stringent health and safety cleaning protocols, which include that every auditorium is thoroughly cleaned between each and every showtime.

• In addition, AMC has instituted enhanced cleaning protocols, which ensure that at least once per hour within an AMC building, the theatre team is cleaning high-touch point areas, including: kiosks, counter tops, restroom areas, glass, handrails and doorknobs.

GUIDANCE FOR GUESTS AND THEATRE STAFF

• AMC has mandated that any theatre associate who feels ill is excused from work and should not come to the theatre.

• We urge all potential guests to stay at home and seek medical assistance if they are not feeling well.

I’m hearing studios plan to move movies straight to streaming instead of theaters.

Now there’s one industry that I have zero sympathy for. The sooner it’s razed to the ground the sooner it can be replaced by something useful.

I’ve been avoiding theaters for years. Decades? With my recliner, streaming Amazon and Netflix, DVDs, and big screen TV, who needs punk kids talking and texting and brats screaming while fat mom is munching on popcorn and reeses cups and slurping her gargantua Dr Pepper?

As movies direct their hate towards conservatives skyrockets, will audiences avoid movie theaters?

Probably.

The Met cancelled today's performance of Der fliegende Holländer; so obviously all simulcasts were also cancelled.

‘The Hunt’ Review: Nothing Deep, Just a Ton of Deplorable Fun

Satire is a wonderful thing. The Hunt’s unpretentious satire is even better, especially since it offers over-the-top violence, a genuine affection for Trump supporters, and the movie’s star, Betty Gilpin.

This kind of satire is good for our country. It’s healthy. It’s a positive thing. The Hunt doesn’t have us hating on one another, we’re not even laughing at one another.… No, what we’re doing is chuckling together at a skewed (but affectionate) image of us and them, and that’s humanizing. This kind of satire actually brings the temperature down. Nothing is healthier than being able to laugh at yourself.

The Hunt is no masterpiece. It has some Big Ideas, some smart ideas, but it’s a grinder and knows it’s a grinder, and therefore it’s more interested in entertainment than depth — and that’s freakin’ perfect. Satire is healthier when it’s silly, when the only goal is to entertain.

Sanctimony is divisive.

Virtue signaling is divisive.

Silliness is a balm.

And to think, people on the left and right almost got this thing blacklisted, almost got it canceled, and did succeed in getting it postponed.

I bring better news…
