In one small suburb on the outskirts of New York City, coronavirus cases jumped from one to more than 100 in less than 10 days.
Now the state's governor is trying to catch up to the virus by setting up a containment area around New Rochelle and deploying the National Guard to assist with food deliveries and clean public spaces.
"We'll go in, we'll clean the schools and assess the situation," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. "This will be a period of disruption for the community."
New Rochelle is about 25 miles outside of New York City.
The issue, the governor says, is "a matter of life and death." And it started with one resident.
The 50-year-old attorney, who works near Grand Central Station in Manhattan, tested positive for the virus on March 2 and was hospitalized at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Cuomo said.
The governor later said the man was New York City's first case of community spread -- meaning officials could not trace the source of his infection.
The man had an underlying respiratory condition that made him vulnerable to the virus but he was stable and improving, officials also said later.
Just two days after the man's positive results, on March 4, his 20-year-old son, a student at New York's Yeshiva University, also tested positive. School officials said he was showing symptoms of the virus.
The wife and 14-year-old daughter of the attorney both also tested positive on the same day.
So did the neighbor who drove him to the hospital.
And a friend of the attorney.
The friend's wife, two sons and daughter tested positive that day too.
The day after, on March 5, the governor says eight other people connected to the attorney tested positive for the virus.

This guy couldn’t have infected more people if he was trying at it.
RE: This guy couldnt have infected more people if he was trying at it.
The worrisome thing is we do not know WHERE he got his infection from.
He only traveled on planes twice recently and never to the epicenter of outbreaks. One place was Israel, the other to Miami.
Could have used an airport restroom. Could have flown on a plane that had not been sanitized.
Anyone know what superspreader’s underlying condition is?
He was kissing, touching or otherwise intimate with ALL of these people. Or it just spreads as easily as a fart in a car. Just like the flu, right?
RE: Anyone know what superspreaders underlying condition is?
FROM THE ARTICLE:
The man had an underlying respiratory condition that made him vulnerable to the virus but he was stable and improving, officials also said later.
I think those most vulnerable to illness from the virus - as he was - also seem to have a more robust colony of the virus in them (more active virus per ounce of blood), making them most likely to transmit the virus to others.
I bet he shook hands with everyone he met.
There are a lot of experts that say contact tracing is now a waste of time and a diversion of resources that are best deployed elsewhere.
The goal now should be to reduce the spread or to mitigate the effects of the virus.
#flattenthecurve is the new buzzword for this process.
The worrisome thing is we do not know WHERE he got his infection from.
Hartsfield-Jackson hub in Atlanta?
That's how diseases spread.
Better Call AeroSaul
Or not
RE: Hartsfield-Jackson hub in Atlanta?
*THAT* is the busiest airport in the United States ( or even the world )!
Not sure if he even passed by there.
You don’t pass by Atlanta on your way to Israel.
We have direct flights from JFK to Miami.
Has Schumer or Cuomo visited him, yet?
They really should...often.
Merkel is right, 60%ish will get it. They can’t stop it. No country can. They can slow it down a bit. And that is all they need. Stopping it will do us no good. Slowing it down will allow us to treat most of the severe cases.
Look at Japan. They are trying to stop it. Ok, lets say they do. They have done a great job already. Then the Olympics come in late July. What happens? A ton of people come to Japan. And then they get it. All at once, and during the Olympics.
Or even if the did not get the Olympics. Take China. They leave everyone in their homes until the virus passes. Then they go back to work like normal. Of course, the virus will come back. And it will race through those who did not get it before.
The reality is that each population has to have the majority of their people get the virus. Or they have to have a majority have the flu shot, or some combination of the two. Then it resolves to a normal disease. It can’t spread as fast because the people who had it, or have the vaccine will not get it, therefore they will not pass it.
Our government won’t say it. But we are not trying to stop it. We are trying to slowly get it without panic.
Wealthiest town in NYS....But a task for the National Guard?? Yeh...sure....expose all our guys. Cuomo is a dumb a**.
Wait he went to Israel too I did not know that, do you know when he went to Israel?
