State health officials joined Chu in asking the CDC and Food and Drug Administration to waive privacy rules and allow clinical tests in a research lab, citing the threat of significant loss of life. The CDC and FDA said no. "We felt like we were sitting, waiting for the pandemic to emerge," Chu told the Times. "We could help. We couldn't do anything."
They held off for a couple of weeks, but on Feb. 25, Chu and her colleagues "began performing coronavirus tests, without government approval," the Times reports. They found a positive case pretty quickly, and after discussing the ethics, they told state health officials, who confirmed the next day that a teenager who hadn't traveled abroad had COVID-19 and the virus had likely been spreading undetected throughout the Seattle area for weeks. Later that day, the CDC and FDA told Chu and her colleagues to stop testing, then partially relented, and the lab found several more cases. On Monday night, they were ordered to stop testing again. ...

Probably would have been hard to anticipate this. But this culture at the CDC needs to permanently change.
Conclusion: cut more federal regulations. All across the board. They hurt more than they help.
Gotta keep the quacks from bilking people and/or making things worse.
Not saying Chu is a quack.
Best not to ask permission and be prepared to apologize afterwards, if necessary.
The CDC is as useless as tits on a boar hog.
this attitude is prevalent in every bureaucracy. That is exactly why limited central authority is a plank in the conservative platform. Decisions such as these must be in the hands of the state authorities.
Other than this covid-19 is more contagious than everyday Flu, the Flu has already killed 100 times or more during the same time. Why there is no lockdown of people with Flu?
I blame aids activists
WOW.
Obama holdovers wanting to make Trump look bad using our blood.
Cuz the flu has been all over the place for centuries??
The problem is the Drs as well.
I still cant forget a Dr here refusing to acknowledge back in January that a rumor that it had been here in December could be right because the CDC has not given their HOLY annointment approval of said case.
Said something along the lines of I will wait for the CDC.
This article here shows why you cant depend on the CDC...nor the DRs who will only rely on the CDC
I think the CDC and FDA type bureaucracies in both South Korea and Taiwan is not operating as they are in the U.S. Right away large scale testing was and is being done. Which begs the question - why couldn’t the U.S. just bought already known good test kits from Taiwan and South Korea; why did they have to re-invent the wheel here so to speak??? Is it all just the arrogance-of-control by the bureaucrats???
The road to hell is being paved by democrat mayoral virtue signaling
This power grab is the new normal.
Its for your own good
