Why String Theory Is Both A Dream And A Nightmare
Forbes ^ | February 26, 2020 | Ethan Siegel

String theory is perhaps the most controversial big idea in all of science today. On the one hand, it's a mathematically compelling framework that offers the potential to unify the Standard Model with General Relativity, providing a quantum description of gravity and providing deep insights into how we conceive of the entire Universe. On the other hand, its predictions are all over the map, untestable in practice, and require an enormous set of assumptions that are unsupported by an iota of scientific evidence.

For perhaps the last 35 years, string theory has been the dominant idea in theoretical particle physics, with more scientific papers arising from it than any other idea. And yet it has not produced even one testable prediction in all that time, leading many to decry that it hasn't even risen to the standard of science. String theory is simultaneously one of the best ideas in the entire history of theoretical physics and one of our greatest disappointments. Here's why.

I once read an article about abstract and other modern art that claimed that “beautiful” is not how critics should think about the value of art. It seems to me that it is probably the single most valuable criterion for art and music, although there are others. But what do I know?

And maybe for mathematics also. But until something has real world testability it can’t be called science; pure mathematics is what it is. IMO.

Better question. do they posit this to avoid confronting the existence of God?

"I've come to the conclusion..."

age contra!

But now you must go against that conclusion.

"...result in a counter action we are not going to like."

You really think He is a malicious God, and an evil demon?

Sorry y'all if I was the one who turned the thread to philosophy instead of Physics. I would much rather it be physics. I dont think it was me and it was probably inevitable. Anyone got more on string theory and the article cited?

“Beauty is often a telltale sign of truth. Beauty is our guide to the intellectual universe—walking beside us through the uncharted wilderness, pointing us in the right direction, keeping us on track—most of the time.”
——David Gelernter, Yale Univ. explaining why it was so hard for him to give up on Darwinism. He thought Darwin’s theory was beautiful.

You are right about the art and beauty. The art schools are not teaching art but a post-modern worldview, according to Francis Schaeffer. What do you know? The truth about beauty.

"If a hypothesis cannot be tested, it is not Science"

No, a theory must be testable, but formal theories don't just appear wholly intact from nothing. Lot's of ideas are played with and examined. That is science too.

“String Theory” pretends that if you can mathematically fabricate a result then it MUST exist in nature. It is not based on and has no basis in empirical science. It’s a mathematicians manufactured theory, which has managed to manufacture needless “theoretical” work for what would otherwise be out of work theorists. It’s quite a feat to manufacture a need for people who just have too much time on their hands with nothing useful to do, and want to get paid for their useless efforts; which include selling the pretense that what they do is needed and useful.

...a malicious God, and an evil demon?

Not malicious, but selfish.God is whoever he is, so our wishes or stories Don't matter. The intelligence created in our particular box either passes the test or is cast aside. Intelligence is such a chaotic thing that getting it right is all but unpredictable, so what better way than to create a box where it emerges naturally and pick from the examples that you liked. By the way I read all the posts after I posted, not before .

I still like string theory because gravity popped out of it without any tinkering. Why else would Physicists spend 30 years chasing something like Abe's white whale?

Thanks, interesting!
I am quoting Descartes and all the discussion around “cogito ergo sum”. Since I accept his conclusion, your suggestion about the motives or the characterization of the “God whoever he is” while novel would not be interesting. In other words, epistemology is settled, I’d rather just go straight to the science.

You however, FRiend, are extremely interesting and I would wonder how you came to the intelligence box idea as a matter of the most pleasant curiosity. I confess that I won’t take the box idea seriously, no offense FRiend, I would just assume at the outset that it is self-refuting and move on.

Thanks for commenting. Your comment was useful for an half hour of pleasant speculation, while I took a shower and dressed. Thanks and I will take note of you in future!

We are members of Reasons to Believe. We have monthly meetings with speakers who are at the tops of their field in String Theory, Quantum Mechanics, Physics, Evolution, Young Earth vs Old Earth, NDEs, Creation, Who was Adam, The Universe, Cosmology, Viruses, Biochemistry, Astronomy, Astrophysics, New Testament, Old Testament, etc etc etc. We believe in Christianity and Science, that they go hand in hand, with God as our creator.... Last meeting we had as our speaker A J Roberts. She has studied viruses for many years and is an expert in them. She was very interesting, we learned a lot as usual.

Anyone in the Austin area, you are welcome to join us. We meet on the UT campus in Austin at the Longhorns for Christ meeting room. We would love to have you! We are planning an RTB cruise in June to Hawaii! Hopefully conorna virus will be a distant memory by then..

We are a NON PROFIT org

"And yet it has not produced even one testable prediction in all that time,..."

Not sure I'd agree with that... Last time I was at a beach I saw many instances of "testable predictions" for string theory... Of course I refrained from any testing since old age has taken its toll... Although many predictions easily came to mind...

By the way I came across this video completely randomly while visiting the Phoenix library. Or was it random? I was trying to find out who composed "O Fortuna" and somehow that simulation link popped up.

Yes. I had looked it up once before. In addition to that music being used often in Hollywood productions it has an interesting back story. The music was written for a poem from the 13th century. As far as I know it was a one hit wonder for Carl.

It is genius art, not science, with no application to reality except in the way avant garde art can mirror reality.
