MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Microsoft (MSFT.O) Chief Executive Satya Nadella said the technology giant will invest $1.1 billion in Mexico over the next five years, according to a promotional video released by the Mexican government on Thursday.
Nadella said the investment is focused on expanding access to digital technology for people and organizations across the country.
Microsoft will build a new data center to deliver client services to help every organization to really get an advantage and drive digital transformation, added Nadella.
The U.S. company will also invest in training labs and skills programs, Nadella said.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, speaking during his daily morning conference, said the investment showed Mexico was an attractive investment destination, touting a strong local currency, stable inflation, and prudent debt management by the government.
The leftist president has faced criticism his governments policies have turned off local and foreign investors, which contributed to the economy last year contracting 0.1 percent in Mexicos first annual decline in a decade.

Look at it this way. Bill is out for one person....Bill!

No way is Mexico a stable place. Cartels own the place and illegals use Mexico as a waypoint to free stuff in the USA.
They would be nuts to waste a few billion there.
The USMCA is a big reason....who knows...maybe draining California of tech and sending it to Mexico may shift the politics of those areas.
AFAIK Bill (Gates) is no longer associated with Microsoft in a way that would affect, or be affected by, this investment. He's busy with his Foundation...
What’s the matter with the good old USA,Bill?
To my eye, this looks like an investment in Microsoft “Cloud” services.”
If they can get a huge chunk of Mexican businesses wired into the Microsoft Cloud, that will be very profitable for many years into the future.
The cartels can keep better track of their books, cooking methods, distribution routes and share hit lists.
yeah because we wouldnt want to invest in the US.
The more and better jobs they have there, the less reason to come here.
BS. If $1,500 makes it thru to the project, after payoffs to corrupt gov't officials and cartels, it'll be a miracle.
Most likely, after all the money is spent on graft, corruption, this'll be MS' HQ and server farm:

I think firms generally want to put their data centers close to their users. If you are selling cloud services to Mexican firms, you probably want to have your data centers in Mexico.
Lying, cheating H1Bs wont like that at all... Good. Good.
I favor investments that strengthen economies in our hemisphere.
This is good imho.
Microsoft jobs are multiplier jobs - 1 of these will leads to hundreds in supplementary jobs. Plus Microsoft has a whole host of partners who then create jobs that provide software within the country.
This will improve Mexico’s economy and reduce migrants heading north. Already most of the migrants coming are not Mexicans but Central Americans - and as things improve, the Central Americans will stay in Mexico (as it is culturally and linguistically closer).
Correct - Azure is already winning over AWS as Microsoft isn’t a competitor to CS users like AWS’s parent is
Where’s the satellite dish?
(Or do they have Verizon Fios?)
