Has sepsis met its match? New treatment may save millions around the world

Sepsis, an infection that kills millions worldwide each year and is the third leading cause of death in the United States, may have finally met its match.

Paul Marik, the EVMS Foundation Distinguished Professor in Internal Medicine, Professor of Internal Medicine and Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, believes he has developed a cure for the life-threatening infection. His treatment breakthrough promises to revolutionize sepsis care and produce results that are nothing short of astonishing.

Vitamin C is often used intravenously as part of a treatment for cancer.

Hydrocortisone is used to relieve inflammation and for a variety of conditions from arthritis to asthma.

Thiamine is a vitamin.

Sepsis is the leading cause of death among hospitalized patients.

As a critical-care physician and head of the general intensive care unit (GICU) at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Dr. Marik used to be locked in a struggle with sepsis. Despite his efforts, one to two people under his care died each week from the disease. That all changed unexpectedly Jan. 5, 2016.

The breakthrough came as Dr. Marik struggled to save a woman dying from overwhelming sepsis. He had recently read about vitamin C as a potential treatment for sepsis, and he recalled that steroids, a common treatment for sepsis, might work well in concert with the vitamin C.

Aware that both were safe and would not harm the patient, he gave her the vitamin C and steroid combination intravenously.

Within hours, his patient was recovering. Two days later she was well enough to leave the ICU.

Dr. Marik and is colleagues were astonished.

In the following days they used the combination therapy on two more patients seemingly destined to die of sepsis. Twice more the patients recovered. Dr. Marik and his team quickly adopted the combination therapy as standard practice.

Yes! Thank you! Is this something all hospitals now know? Or do we need to tuck it away in our brains to tell our dr. in case the flu hits us hard this year and end up in icu? And, if one has received pneumonia vaccinations, are we less likely be stricken with sepsis?

It only took the medical establishment 150 years to admit Vit C cured and prevented scurvy while millions died. Now they are hijacking all the work done by others since the 1940’s in this area.

but steroids are not without risk in the long run....

Here's an interesting one for you.

I have cataracts (getting removed next month). This particular type of cataract is caused by....steroids. Over the last 45 years I have occasionally had to get a shot of cortisone in my back. Not a medically serious issue (muscular), but *extremely* painful when it happens.

According to the doctor, while they are caused by steroids, only some people get them. She also told me that it's not a function of frequency or dosage, even topical cortisones can do it to some people.

Almost died of E. coli antibiotic-resistant septic shock with multiple organ failure five years ago. I was on a ventilator for 16 days, in the ICU for 21 days. I am astounded by this news. Do all the ERs and ICUs now know about this? I hope?

NO...they do not know...or would not do it, unless your family could get them to do it.

Some nerve they have after labeling and recruiting monkeys to go after the real pioneers by calling them “quacks” for decades.

Anyone with UTI should use D-Mannose....it solves the majority of those with the problem.

However, when your loved one is about to die

In desperation, you will believe anything you can find on the internet that claims to work.........Not saying it's bad, it's just human nature.

Remember when Laetrile was the cancer cure that patients flocked to Mexico for treatment that wasn't available in the U.S.? That didn't turn out to well........

Two years ago my adult son was on life support due to sepsis. They told us he had basically no chance of survival. He did make it.

I would think that at that time you would try anything and everything.

Me too, but, Gay State Conservative wouldn't. He said: "When Harvard, Columbia, Hopkins and the Mayo Clinic approve I'll accept it. Until then, no thanks."

I'm glad I'm not his kid!

My son is now on experimental drugs and also a clinical trial at a hospital out of state. ( Think Right to Try ).

There are times when you try anything because there is no other choice.

He would try a witch doctor and voodoo if he thought there was any chance at all that it would work.

Any elderly people die soon after a broken hip even if there is no infection. Had that in the family.
