Is It Possible to Be Too Tired to Sleep?
Science Focus ^ | Alice Gregory

Posted on 01/26/2020 11:57:51 PM PST by nickcarraway

It’s perfectly possible to feel tired and at the same time have trouble dropping off. Certain life stresses and health problems can leave us feeling exhausted, but at the same time make it difficult to relax and get to sleep. Also, missing out on sleep can disrupt our natural rhythms, which can make us feel wide awake when we’d usually be sleeping.

Finally, caregivers sometimes refer to their infants as being ‘too tired to sleep’. This happens when the baby has been awake for longer than their little bodies can cope with, resulting in stress and difficulties settling.

That’s why you should never have a wicker or mesh wastebasket in the bathroom.

I too have trouble sleeping. Changes in heart medicines and stress of having a toddler full-time to care for has made it hard to sleep through the night.

I also take a diuretic for my heart and that means I'm up every hour or two to pee at night. Sometimes I can't fall back to sleep and just stare at the clock. That's why I'm at the computer at 5 AM typing this.

My normal biorhythms are disrupted when I'm under stress and not following my normal routine. I also don't think a full 7-8 hour sleep at night is needed as I get older and my physical activity during the day has slowed down.

Some days I get so tired I can't keep my eyes open but if I try to lay down to take a nap, I can't fall asleep.

It's inexplicable why sleep is more difficult at age 72 but it is.

“Too tired to sleep” is when you are watching television (or surfing the internet) even when there is nothing to see, yet can’t force yourself to get up and go to the other room to go to bed.

Advil PM works miracles for this problem.

My experience exactly.

If I want to sleep all night, I take a whole Advil PM.

Three or four hours, I take a half.

For a two-hour nap, if I really need sleep, I take a quarter.

The stuff works like clockwork...just be sure to have a bite to eat before taking any ibuprofen.

And take ADVIL, not Tylenol.

The latter makes me jumpy, not sleepy.

Funnily enough, I’m going through chemo, am house-bound with nearly zero activity ... and that’s about how I’m (naturally) treating sleep right now myself. I’m more like 40 than 77, but when my body says it’s time to shut down ... it’s nap time, and they’re glorious.

I’ve have had this issue on occasion. It’s real, and for the issues sited. At least for me it was.

That didn’t work for me but apparently camomile tea with milk and honey knocks me right out.

I have those symptoms. As I drift off to sleep I’ll hear all sorts of noises that wake me up. The most common one sounds like something heavy moving across the floor. I wake up and immediately know it was in my brain. My body sometimes will do a quick spastic shake, also as I’m drifting off to sleep.

I’ve been in a stretch where I can’t sleep in bed. To get rest, I have to sit in a recliner. Sleep very well there, but in bed, just lay awake.

For chemo, I just take one pill a day. It’s like a sleeping pill. I take it at night, but feel drowsy all the time. It’s called fatigue.

For me it is a loud click like someone throwing a switch. I always thought it was coming from my CRT TV. It still happened when I got a flat screen and I happened to stumble upon an article about sleep disorders.

How can you recharge without sleep?
Sleep is divided into 4 segments each about 90-120 minutes in length. 1st segment fights infections, repairs injuries and rebuilds damage. 2nd segment manufactures hormones, enzymes, chemicals, antibodies and various blood cells (red & white) needed by the body. 3rd segment does cleanup, removal of dead cells, and processing of waste. The final segment moves waste, urine and mucus to where it can be eliminated when you wake up.
If you don’t let the body do these things you aren’t helping yourself.

In my 50s I stayed awake 72 hours one time and I had no trouble falling to sleep at the end. I slept about 8 hours after. The thinking process while awake was somewhat a mess. Hard to concentrate and slow to figure out easy things.

Yep - when one is running on adrenaline and possible other stimulants to keep going, it takes a bit of relaxing before the stem clears enough for sleep to happen...

OMG sleep paralysis is the most scary of anything.

Your mind is totally awake but you can’t move anything.

I had this several years ago and hope I never have it again.
