I believe Christopher was responsible for drawing the famous map of Middle Earth.

95 is a damn good run for a man.

I guess the Tolkien Torch passes to Simon and Nicholas now...

He not only hated the Jackson movies he prevented sequels based on the other books. I was surprised to learn he agreed to a deal for a series based on another Middle Earth age.

Tolkien was the first novelist of any kind that I read. I’ll never forget reading the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit as a senior in high school. From there, I completely devoured any info I could get on the Tolkien fantasy world. RIP.

It’s a pity because there were some great scenes in The Silmarillion that would have looked awesome on film.

Sauron was a piker compared to Morgoth.

He hated the Peter Jackson films.

Never knew this. Why exactly? Leaving out the Barrow downs? NO Tom Bombadil? Just wondering.

The movies were action based. Christofer wanted something else.

Yes I am curious to this fact. I thought he was part of the producing crew for source material.

I thought the LOTR movies had some nice moments, although I had definite problems with some other parts. The Hobbit movies, on the other hand, were an atrocity. Much of those films just looked like video games. Appalling.

So smaller-screen folks can view this fascinating map.

It is amazing to me that he was able to achieve so much in terms of editing and publishing his father’s works in the last 40 years.

If anyone here is a Tolkien fan and wants to learn about the development of the trilogy while getting to read long passages from the early (and previously unpublished versions of the story) do yourself a favor and start buying these:

The 6th - 9th volumes are the ones that cover The Lord of the Rings and they are fascinating. Strider was originally going to be a Hobbit. Who knew?

Not just one, but multiple reasons. I read he considered the next-to-last chapter of the book (”The Scouring of the Shire”) with the Battle of Bywater (which takes place in the Shire) to be essential — almost, the “moral point” of the whole trilogy -—and was quite irate when it was left out of all of the adaptations.

I was disappointed with the Peter Jackson Tolkien films, but thought he did well with Narnia. Douglas Gresham, CS Lewis's step-son went to great lengths to ensure the Lewis estate maintained a lot of involvement with the development and production of the films.

If you've seen, "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe," there is the seen where the Pevensey children have been moved out of London to the Professor's estate in the country. One day, during a rainstorm, they are sitting around bored (leading up the game of hide and seek, where Lucy discovers the wardrobe) and there is a radio playing in the background broadcasting the latest war news. The voice of the newscaster is Doug Gresham :-)

And so many authors shamelessly steal from Tolkien.

Re #6:
Visually I think the Peter Jackson LotR
nailed it. The acting was very good as well. Character motivation, they screwed up. And don’t even let me get started on Arwen. Every time she showed up I found an excuse to leave the room.
