James Bond Producer Barbara Broccoli Says Character Can’t Be A Woman, Can Be ‘Any Color’
Daily Caller ^ | 01/16/20 | David Hookstead

James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli has some very clear thoughts on whether or not a woman can ever play the iconic spy.

There has been growing chatter over the years that a woman should take over the role once Daniel Craig retires. That’s obviously absurd, and the woman calling the shots agrees.

Broccoli told Variety the following in an interview published Wednesday:

"He can be of any color, but he is male. I believe we should be creating new characters for women — strong female characters. I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that."

I couldn’t agree more. I’m all for any male actor who can get the job done playing 007. What I’m not for is having the role shift to being a woman.

It just doesn’t make sense, and it’s absurdly stupid. His name is literally James. He can be black, white, yellow, orange, purple, green or any other color you’d like.

What James Bond can’t be is a woman. It wouldn’t make any sense. I don’t know why people feel the need to take the legendary series and make it a social experiment.

Why can’t we just leave some things alone? Ian Fleming’s series has been around for decades, and people love it.

It doesn’t need to change at all. In fact, it should be one of those things protected from dumb experiments, and I’m glad Broccoli agrees that the role can’t be played by a woman.

It’s great to see at least somebody in Hollywood is still full of common sense. Let’s all agree that James Bond will always be a man, let’s all enjoy “No Time to Die,” let’s send off Daniel Craig in style and let’s not ruin 007.

Yeah, but James Bond beds a variety of women in all his movies. He’s called a stud. If you have a female Jane Bond bedding man after man she’ll be called a slut. On the other hand, if she too beds woman after woman, the movie will be a hit in certain circles.

Make him a transgender man (woman who identifies as a man) that prefers to be called James Bond, problem solved. /sarcasm

Barbara Broccoli’s political donations show her to be a liberal Democrat, but she would be hammered by her extended family if she endangered the astonishingly lucrative Bond franchise through bad script choices or idiotic casting. By gifts and inheritances, “Cubby” Broccoli and his heirs widely parcelled out pieces of the Bond franchise throughout the family. There are toddlers today who, unawares, are set for golden lives so long as James Bond keeps earning big.

If James Bond in the next movie is not a transgendered lesbian woman of color, I will not attend!

I will not attend unless the next 007 is in transition, but also questioning cis/trans identity during female-to-male conversion whilst identifying as queer/subordinate.

The ideal handgun might be a .22 short derringer. Might I also recommend the 1983 Chevrolet Chevette Sport Edition (handed down from Dad) as Bond car and to replace those sexist Savile Row suits perhaps a nice Mu-mu and Birkenstocks. Finally, a Bond for the "Bernie" generation!

Since she feels that way, she should have it, officially in writing, that James Bond will never, ever, be a woman.

I’d like to see a Zulu warrior in full garb as Bond, James Bond. But being as they kicked the Brits to the curb long ago, it probably wouldn’t be much to ‘Marvel’ at on the big screen.

Retire James Bond, the original Bond is a WWII vet. If he were real he’d be in the SIS Retirement home goosing nurses!
Retire him and you have the freedom to make a new Bond (make them related or something!) anything you want it to be ! One of the new Q division gimmicks would have it switch genders as the mission requires! There’s what 54, that would be a lot of movies to cycle through.

In essence Bond became ageless as the movies rolled on. Always in the 30 to maybe 50 range. The gadgets and cars also freeze Bond at the time each movie was made as well. The books themselves began in the early 1950s and Fleming cranked out about 1 a year until his death in 1964. They also reflect that time.

I think the movie franchise could have gone on in its mythical eternal 30-50 year old Bond forever but with this ridiculous turn it could easily kill it.

IIRC, I read a WSJ article about the handover some years ago. Cubby told his kids something like this: “You have a gold mine here - don’t muck it up.”

There was a 1950s US tv show called “Climax!”.

It did weekly hour-long condensations of popular stories.

Looking it up, “Casino Royale” was the third epi in the series, with Barry Nelson as the American James Bond.

(Peter Lorre played “Le Chiffe”, eventually reprised by Orson Welles and Mads Mikkelsen.)

In the 2018 film, “Mary, Queen of Scots,” Shakespearean actor Adrian Lester, who is black; portrays Elizabeth’s ambassador to the Scottish court, Lord Thomas Randolph.

Since we have many paintings of the guy made during the period in question, we must now ask, was he just trying to cover up the fact that he was actually a black man?

I have pretty much lost interest in the Bond franchise. There is only so far one can go with something as formulaic as Bond. I perked ap a little for the Craig reboot, but I did not care a lot for his following films. I have the Blu-ray of Spectre which I still have not watched.

They've been doing the films now for over 50 years. It's not surprising that he's jumped the shark and that he does not fit into today's PC culture.

I was watching the new Netflix "Dracula" series recently and thought to myself that actor who portrays Dracula would be perfect as James Bond. Then I looked him up and found out he's actually Danish.

But he plays a better Englishman than any British actor I can thing of. And his last name is Bang. How cool would that ge?

I am unfamiliar with the actor or his roles, but I agree, from his photo, he ‘looks’ Bond.

Fleming’s Bond was half Scottish and half Swiss.

She just owns the 007 character, she didn't invent it.

Ian Fleming said Bond should look like Hoagie Carmichael.

Last I looked, Hoagie Carmichael was pretty damn white.
