MANILA (Reuters) - At least 11 people have been killed and more than 300 treated in hospital after drinking coconut wine in the Philippines, including some who were celebrating at a Christmas party, health and local authorities said on Monday.
The poisoning occurred in Laguna and Quezon, two provinces south of Manila, and all had consumed lambanog, a drink popular in provinces and consumed widely during holidays and celebrations.
Many were admitted to hospitals on the urging of mayor Vener Munoz in Rizal, Laguna, where the deaths occurred between Thursday and Sunday.

Never drink anything that’s concocted by moonshiners.....let alone in a 3rd world country.
Agreed!
Lived in the Philippines for 9 years. Never once tried this dreg.
= = = = = = = =
I was in and out of there for 4 years (58-62) and don’t think I tried any of this.
Tried most anything at that time.
Eating ‘fried treats’ on the streets of Olongapo allows me to say I have probably eaten most ‘anything’.
Green San Magoo was always good for last night in port...Really ‘felt’ it next AM when getting underway. Most everyone walking around like zombies..
AH...good times...
I once contemplated producing my own liquor. The process is simple and and a still is simple to make. Then I considered the low cost of liquor at the supermarket and figured it wasn't worth the effort.
Coconut wine? Yikes. I feel sorry for the poor suckers who have to stomp those things.
LoL....
When I was married one of my mothers friends we were visiting said ‘this special occassion demands a special toast’ He went to his cellar and brought out ‘Dandelion Wine’ he had made. Of course the taste was wonderful which surprised me....smooth as silk and went down just as easy!
There are super strains of yeast that can create a 40 proof alcohol without distillation.
A sort of nasty, super wine made from plain ole sugar and water.
No cellulose so no chance of ending up with methanol.

My mother’s father made dandelion wine.
I worked a job in the 90’s in the Philippines.I got some coconut vodka on a night out. Talk about blowing your cookies. I think I would rather eat Balut than the vodka.
Hey old man, I was born in ‘62. Retired just in the last few months. I married a beautiful Filipina. The youngest of 9 children.
Her dad fought with the US Army during WWII. He was a teenager at the time.
One of the few to receive the US promise of citizenship for his efforts in that war. Her uncle, his brother, procrastinated and lost out when the US later reneged on this promise.
While her dad never made it to the USA his citizenship made our marriage and her eventual naturalization a very smooth process.
In those days marrying a foreign national was a paperwork hassle not easily overcome. Years of hassle and costs was eliminated because of her dad’s timely processing of required documents in the time immediately after WWII.
His brother’s procrastination cost him. As the USA later reneged upon that promise. Thousands of Filipino’s who were eligible for citizenship because of General MacArthur’s promise were later denied citizenship when the USA later reneged on that promise.
ROFLMAO!!!!
Whoops!
Yeah...well, you’re a chicken...
LOL
I think It’s more of a duck. Those guys selling those things would come around on payday. It was like an ice cream truck without the bells(or anything good to eat). They did have lines.
A big ole Woof! and a Merry Christmas to you, brother dawg!
I don’t wish the racist Alex W any harm, but that’s a valid question. Praying for his “washing machine.”
> He went to his cellar and brought out Dandelion Wine he had made.
My dad made dandelion wine for a couple of years back in the early 70’s. I’ve still got a few jars sitting around in the fruit cellar. Just like you said, “smooth as silk and went down just as easy”. He didn’t have any fancy wine yeast so he used baker’s yeast so the brew has a pronounced bread-like flavor to go with the sweet-citrus flavor of the dandelion & fruit base. After writing this, I think I’m going to have to break out a bottle !
...now let me get this straight..
You put the lime in the coconut
And drank them both up?...
I said “Doctor!
Is there nothing I can take
To relieve this bellyache”???!!?
Dreadful. RIP.
