Boris Johnson reveals plan to bring back pounds and ounces: PM sees 'no reason why people should be prosecuted for selling goods in imperial measures after Brexit

Boris Johnson has revealed plans to bring back pounds and ounces once Brexit is done as he attacks Jeremy Corbyn as “the most extreme Left-wing candidate produced by the Labour Party in a century” entering Number 10.

In a wide-ranging interview with the Daily Mail, the Prime Minister laid out his post-election blueprint to lift the EU ban on imperial measurements and hark back to the old system.

He said: “We will bring back that ancient liberty. I see no reason why people should be prosecuted.”

The Conservative leader added: “I think the reality is a lot of people are now educated in the metric system; we have to recognize that. But people… I understand what a pound of apples is. I also understand what a kilo of apples is. There will be an era of generosity and tolerance towards traditional measurements.” …

Go ahead, President Trump, after annexing Greenland as the 51st state, add England and Wales as 52 and 53. Scotland and Northern Island of course can come along as 54 and 55 if they’d like.

Oh, and next in line, as 57? Poland, please.

Sorry, my counting is off a bit there—but Western Canada could of course always slip in as 56.

I’m looking forward to a return to pounds, shillings and pence...
12 shillings to the pound. 20 pence to the shilling...

Greenland, I can see as strong Republicans.

Wales and Scotland? Not so much. They are full-fledged into the Nanny state. They would vote for what would pass as extreme Leftist Democrats in those two countries.

It’s the other way around; 12p to one shilling and 20 shillings (240p) to £1.

Give Puerta Rico independence but combine Guam, the FSM and CNMI into 57

For #58 there are a couple of provinces in the Philippines that might be good.

Metric System is ongoing proof of the STUPIDITY OF PROFESSORS of Academia.

Metric is a stupid system for everyday use. Europe should keep it as a never ending reminder of the stupidity of University Professors.

Base 10 measure for everyday use is ignorant and stupid.

Reminds me also of the Biblical shekel, which was divided into 20 gerahs.

It's easy to pick out non-STEM types. They are the ones who blandly spout the "Go METRIC" meme, without ever determining why we haven't.

But, they wouldn't be the ones who would have to pay to simply eliminate all the Imperial tooling, machines, and the tools to maintain and repair them.

A company has a 60 year old packaging machine with a burned out motor. It's scaled in inches, uses a 20 inch sheet of plastic as feed stock. A Leftist would demand that it be scrapped. A conservative would want to replace the motor.

The arrogance of its proponents is evident in that they call it the “Système Internationale d’Unités” (international system of units), using communistic terms.

Base 10 is much easier to use, but it requires converting a lot of old, established measurements into that formula. The English weren’t the only ones that had a base 12 formula; it’s actually founded on the proportions of the human body, starting with the foot....yes that same foot that’s under the ankle. However, having an easily divisible standard is better.

And this is confusing. I go to Europe a lot so I’ve worked it out and can do it fairly quickly mentally - at least a good approximation. So maybe it should be the official measurement internationally, but they certainly shouldn’t criminalize deviation from it (which I think the EU does one).

I'm an engineer. All of my education is in SI units, A.K.A. metric. At the same time all of my real world experience is in imperial units. It leads me to always be doing conversions in my head now whenever I have to use metric in the real world. Like "So it's 1500 km, that's about 4,500 feet and 5,280 ft/mile so it's a little over 3/4 mile." Because even after all these years I have no real world frame of reference that lets me just "think" in metric, I have to translate it except when just doing math.

But don't worry, I'm an electrical engineer so my disability with metric isn't dangerous! Volts and amps are the same in both!

And to illustrate, I just said in my example that 1,500 km is a little over 3/4 mile. I meant METERS, not km. Duh. But it proves the point, I can’t think in metric naturally, I need to concentrate on it.

I can’t take your suggestion seriously unless you add Hungary to the list. They are experts at quickly building effective border walls.
