Observe Mercury partially eclipsing the Sun.
TOPICS: Astronomy; Education; Miscellaneous; Science
KEYWORDS: astronomy; bonnietyler; mercury; science; solar; sun
This is one of the thirteen times a century we can observe Mercury passing in front of the sun. It's happening right now and will last most of the day.
***Don't try to observe this in person without the proper proective eyewear.)***
Enjoy!

Pretty cool. (Makes it seem not so early out here!)
Thanks, One Guy. BTTT

My pleasure, glennaro. This livestream is includes video feeds from Norway and England but if anyone finds a good video feed from the U.S., please provide a link.

Wonder if the
McMathPierce solar telescope at Kitts Peak (AZ) will be looking and showing? Sunrise there is at about 9am EST and would take a bit longer than that for proper angle of viewing.
In any case, the views being shown show just how big the sun is. As Mercury is 38% of the diameter of Earth, if the viewpoint was from Mars and of an Earth transit, that small spot would only be three times larger!

Pinhole projection giving me nothing at all.
Last time I smoked glass black using a candle, sun was a dim yellow disk, we could see the black dot of Mercury on the face of the sun.
We did not stare, and the glass was very heavily smoked. Honestly, I don’t think there was danger, but no medical or astronomical authority endorses the method. Caution, good sense, at your own risk.

Looking at the online video, I can see why pinhole projection isn’t working. You can barely see a red dot on the orange sun.

Thanks. That Mercury is one God-forsaken flame-scorched rock. I’ll stick with the big blue marble.

Somehow, I never think of our sun as purple...

Check out spaceweather.com on and off for great technical information and access to the best space-related images. They will also keep you well-informed on the deepest solar minimum of the space age (taking place now). Today’s mercury transit is their top story.

That Mercury is one God-forsaken flame-scorched rock. Flame-scorched it is BUT amazingly there is still surface ice in the deep craters. where the sun never reaches! WOW!

Tried to look this morning with my solar glasses, but,it was too early, and, now it’s clouding up and there are gale warnings for tomorrow.
just have to live with the internet.

I tried the pinhole projection technique in 2004 and 2012 for the transits of Venus with no luck...and Venus is much larger than Mercury (almost as large as Earth).
