This is one of the thirteen times a century we can observe Mercury passing in front of the sun. It's happening right now and will last most of the day.

***Don't try to observe this in person without the proper proective eyewear.)***

Enjoy!

Wonder if the McMath–Pierce solar telescope at Kitts Peak (AZ) will be looking and showing? Sunrise there is at about 9am EST and would take a bit longer than that for proper angle of viewing.

In any case, the views being shown show just how big the sun is. As Mercury is 38% of the diameter of Earth, if the viewpoint was from Mars and of an Earth transit, that small spot would only be three times larger!

Pinhole projection giving me nothing at all.

Last time I smoked glass black using a candle, sun was a dim yellow disk, we could see the black dot of Mercury on the face of the sun.

We did not stare, and the glass was very heavily smoked. Honestly, I don’t think there was danger, but no medical or astronomical authority endorses the method. Caution, good sense, at your own risk.
