The only way to enter the mountain fortress of Sela, Jordan, is to climb the staircase cut into a natural cleft in the rock on its eastern side.

What a location! Most spectacular and remote. I wish that I had visited it, in earlier years, when I could have climbed up.

The Nabonidus Inscription at Sela...
Boy if I had a dollar for every time I’ve thought about the Nabonidus Inscripton at Sela before today...
:)
It NEVER ceases to amaze me, history that is.
I find several thousand years of civilization history as fascinating as the study of the universe.
And sometimes as hard to understand!
Simply remarkable.

My Neo-Babylonian is a bit rusty. All I can make out is “______ didn’t _______ himself”.

Re: studying water management structures
My first thought as I began to read - where do they get water?
Hard to imagine that a natural water source existed 600 feet above the semi-arid land.
But, even harder to believe they carried water up the stairs every day.

Does kind of look like some of the stuff on Little St. James island.

Just the person I’m looking for!
What does the Neo-Babylonian word “Ciaramella” mean?

Re: slaves
I was thinking more about how they would survive a prolonged siege.
Was this a fortress to protect important leaders and their families?
Was it just an excellent observation post?
Offensively, it does not appear to have any value, unless they could catapult rocks down on a passing army.

Boy you’re right. Slaves would be useless during a siege.
From what I read, HE conquered it and I would like to know how but i’m too lazy to look it up lol
But a prolonged siege?
how much water could you have on hand and how long would it stay drinkable.
Interesting.
