Don't get old... I'm beat!
10/20/2019

Posted on 10/20/2019 3:54:25 PM PDT by Kevin in California

Our waterfowl season opened yesterday in California. Yes, we're still allowed to chase those fowl. I pulled a 2-dayer and just got home. I'm beat.

As for the hunting, I got a few. Nothing lights out but just getting out with the dog was well worth the effort.

Now, I'm ready for bed...LOL

Every now & then I’ll catch one of his old movies on TBS. My dad used to say that saying which is where I learned it from. I don’t know if I actually ever heard him say it on TV though. Asked my dad what he meant by that saying. He explained that Jimmy used to end his show with that saying. Asked him who Mrs. Calabash was, he told me he didn’t know. Comic Sonny King, who worked with Durante during his career, stated in an interview that the mysterious “Mrs. Calabash” was indeed Jimmy’s late wife Jeanne Olson, but “Calabash” was a reference to Calabasas, California, where she was hospitalized in her later years.

Thanx. He had a great ending to his show. Walking through the dark stage and stopping at interspersed spot lights. Simple, classic.

Canadian Geese are highly successful / far-too-numerous pests that have to be aggressively culled to reduce the problems they cause

You mean like doing a bird-a-cide into the engines of Captain Sully’s Aircraft so He could Practice Water Landings ?

Hey ! There’s a way to cook the extra fat out of Geese- run them through a Jet Engine Whirlwind Cook Pot. It Degreases, it Slices, it Dices and it Rices. From Flight to Plate ! All in 30 seconds or less.

My SIL has an Old Book (Published in like 1923) on Raising, Killing, Cleaning, Preserving all kinds of Meats. One day I was looking through it and found a way to Defeather Birds using a Hatpin.

While holding the Bird’s head from the back take your Thumb and Index Finger on each side of the Beak hinge and the back of the Head resting in the Web of Your Hand. Pinch the Thumb and Index Finger to open the Beak. Place the Hatpin at the top of Mouth. Then push the Pin into the back of the Neck and into the Spine until the end of the Pin protrudes out the backside of the Neck. This us supposed to Puncture the Nerve and it Releases the Skin at the Quill and the Feathers will now pull out easily.

While I have never had the opportunity to do this Myself I have told many People about this and never heard back one way or the other.

PS- This probably needs to happen soon after the Bird is killed.

We have a cabin six hours north, which is just about to the UP of MI. No problems so far. We have seen one wolf on our field cameras in the past 5 years. They also have a wolf season up there that keeps the packs thinned down.

We would never knowingly put our dogs in harms way.

A. We love them.
B. They’re expensive and time-consuming to train properly.

Exactly! The last two pups (6 months old) are now in the kennels like Big Dawgs.

Chasing the cats when they were smaller was fun for all - not so much anymore!

My old farm was across from a private lake owned by the DNR and when the Canada Geese were on the move, it was almost as easy as swatting them down with a broom! They never bothered my gardens, though.

One day my hunting buddies took all of my decoys from the pole barn and placed them all over my garden so I would drive up to THAT when I came home from work. Smart@sses!

I almost always had Mallard decoys floating in my rain barrels, too. ;)

Good times. :)

I hear about the depredations all the time...mostly bear hunters training dogs and most of the the dogs lost seem to be plotts.

By the way,we have spent a lot of time just below the UP border in the Boulder Junction area. God’s country.

In many places in the US, Canadian Geese are highly successful

Here in S.E. Michigan they don't even migrate since they're born and grow up here.

Twice in the past week on a street to my house a group had traffic stopped since they were just strolling across the street.....vehicles don't even scare them.

I love Wisconsin. I am it’s biggest Cheerleader! :)

Yes, Plots are used for bear hunting; we own three right now. He took the youngest plot with him last night and the best Walker Dog for some raccoon hunting. The plot didn’t know what he was doing, but he had a good time, LOL!
