...snip... And over the weekend, State and Energy Department officials were quietly reviewing plans for evacuating roughly 50 tactical nuclear weapons that the United States had long stored, under American control, at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey, about 250 miles from the Syrian border, according to two American officials.
Those weapons, one senior official said, were now essentially Erdogans hostages. To fly them out of Incirlik would be to mark the de facto end of the Turkish-American alliance. To keep them there, though, is to perpetuate a nuclear vulnerability that should have been eliminated years ago.
I think this is a first a country with U.S. nuclear weapons stationed in it literally firing artillery at US forces, Jeffrey Lewis of the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies wrote last week.

It might long term be better to have this crisis and sort it out.
The overlapping historic, tribal, ethnic, and religious claims to the same lands make this near impossible to sort out. It would be tempting to suggest blocking off the whole region and just let them fight it out. In any case, we should boot Turkey from NATO, else exit it ourselves. NATO does not serve our purposes anymore, Turkey is not an ally, and we are by association caught up in their genocide, which they have a history of. Personally, I think that any Islamic cult country or group should be seen as an enemy, which they ultimately are. Where have all the Christians gone? Dead at the hands of these murderers?
I hope the nukes are long gone. Should have been pulled out when the Turks wouldnt let us stage Operation Iraqi Freedom through there. No matter what you think of OIF, the handwriting was on the wall regarding the Turks. Darn sure should have been pulled when power was cut to Incirlik in the 2016 coup attempt/sham (?).
As far as Im concerned, the US military presence in Turkey should be removed entirely.
Pelosi, Clinton, and some man went to Turkey to PREVENT OIF from going through Turkey.
You’d have thought they wanted US servicemen to die in greater numbers.
Let the ME take care of itself.
If the nukes are still there. Lot’s of rumors they were moved sometime ago.

Now the NY Times is worried that we’re not engaged in enough imperialism. I wonder if it’s because Trump is in charge, and the Times would like to flame the discontent of the Neo-Cons.
So this is the by-product of unelected lackeys questioning every move by the President. He needs to start arresting and jailing these ‘resistors’ for sedition and treason. Period.
Wait until President Trump starts pulling us out of Afghanistan. The media/DC swamp reaction will make this pullout look pristine compared to that no matter how well it is planned and executed.
I thought we got those nukes out of incirlic long ago.
How about this for a response: So cute, so early in the morning, hoping to sneak idiotic false memes about President Trump into the "discussion". How does being a troll and insulting our intelligence further discussion?
Just tired of all the oh-so-concerned going off half-cocked and helping the dDems and the Graham/McCain types do their damage...the then-apt statement by the guy who made the Kurds seem like a bunch of friendly, American-goal-oriented do-gooders when he said, "you're either with us or you're against us", seems almost apropos. Meanwhile we have word that Erdogan wants to discuss thing, Russia is stepping in and Pence is heading over with a delegation even as President Trump announced economic devices to let Turkey know they need to "temper" things - none of which would be occurring if he had kept a very small force in place and in harm's way for no good reason. You're saying that the President is endangering the world because some idiot at the NYSlimes claims that Turkey will now have access/control over the nukes we have there - as you insinuate he's a complete idiot instead of the Best President....Ever - at least to those who've been paying constant and continuous attention instead of going off hunting sharks to jump every time the evil side makes a statement that tweaks their emotions to the point their brains turn off and they skitter like hot oil on a frying pan.
With us being replaced by the Russians, Erdogan has an incentive to negotiate. Yes, Turks are blood-thirsty. Russians are too, and they could roll right over Turkey any time they wanted.
The calamity came in 1921.
Everything since then has been details.
Couldn’t agree more.
This is allowing them to take care of themselves.
The U.S. isn’t sending troops.
We either remain engaged, or surrender vast regions to Russia, Iran, and other bad players in full.
I remember back in the 1960s when Russia had some clout in the Mediterranean. When we had problems, we were pretty isolated in certain areas.
We don’t want to return to that.
