The Great Peacemaker, whose name means "Two River Currents Flowing Together" and is sometimes referred to as Deganawida, was an Iroquois Prophet who convinced five warring Indian tribes to join in peace.
He prophesied that a "white serpent" would come to his people's lands and make friends with them, only to deceive them later.
A "red serpent" would later make war against the "white serpent."
After a season, a "black serpent" would come and defeat both the "white" and "red serpents".
According to the prophecy, when the people gathered under the elm tree become humble, all three "serpents" would be blinded by a light many times brighter than the sun. Deganawidah said that he would be that light.
The black serpent is black face. It’s taking everyone down.
Nope. The Cherokee were allied with the British in the French and Indian War, while the Shawnee were the opposition aligned with France.
Read some history.
Also read about Shikellamy, a Sachem or Peace Chief, who was friends with the Penn Family settlement and was responsible for most of the Iroquois siding with the British against the French.
Shikellamy actually resided at the British Fort Agusta near current day Sunbury Pennsylvania where the two branches of the Susquehanna River come together.
The Cherokee were in the south.
Where and when was this first written down?
In sacred geometry the serpent was a common representation for consciousness.
Legend has it, I am Seneca Iroquois partly.
Many tribes moved into the Iroquois territory to live in peace.
One of the largest was the Tuscarora who moved up from the Carolinas.
I read somewhere that over 209 tribes moved into the Iroquois Nation. It became a melting pot.
Whereas Liberty is defined.
it’s hoagie
I'm sorry...I worked in Manhattan for decades but I grew up outside of Philadelphia; the proper name for this delicacy is...
Yes, that is true. They settled in what is now the Southern Tier of NY and the NE part of Pennsylvania.
no mention of the rainbow serpent......
Why does it always have to be snakes?
This!
And then there is the Caduceus vs Rod of Asclepius for the symbol of medicine.
Yep I am talking about the Cherokees, not the Iroquois
Asps. Very dangerous.
YOU’RE OUT OF THE TRIBE!!!
But drop some Hoagies off before you leave :)
Plus there’s a million different version of where and how the name originated.
I believe the name given by Italians working in Hog Island in PA is the derivative.
