Rachel Maddow Joins ‘Batwoman’ as Gotham Radio Host Vesper Fairchild

The CW’s Batwoman has added a surprising name to the call-sheet, as MSNBC host Rachel Maddow joins the cast. Maddow will take on the role of Vesper Fairchild, a snarky Gotham City radio and TV personality with ties to the superhero world in both the DC Comics source material and the CW’s Arrow-verse. In the comics, Vesper becomes romantically involved with Bruce Wayne before she is murdered on the orders Lex Luthor, who is the President of the United States at the time. Classic scenario. The character has a much smaller presence on the small screen, where she is only mentioned by name as a former fling with Arrow‘s Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell).

Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries told THR a bit about how Maddow’s version of the radio personality—who will reportedly never actually appear on-screen—fits into the series.

“We consider Vesper Fairchild to be the sardonic Voice of Gotham. In addition to Rachel’s interest in Batwoman, we thought she’d be the perfect casting choice because her own hard-hitting journalism wildly contrasts Vesper’s penchant for snark, gossip and criticism of female superheroes.” Batwoman takes place in a Gotham City three years after the appearance of Batman. Bruce Wayne’s cousin, Kate Kane (Ruby Rose), returns home to find a city in turmoil being guarded by a paramilitary force called the Crows and threatened by a whimsical madwoman named Alice (Rachel Skarsten).

Or is it because the fantasy world in her head is crazier than Gotham City.

You’d think Madcow’s character would be called “Bat$hit.”

“because her own hard-hitting journalism”

Haha. She literally does nothing but report deep state propaganda nonstop. Whether or not she fully understands her real place in the world, the reality is that she’s little more than a mockingbird.

not that it matters. I was already disappointed with how Supergirl was making Superman look stupid.

Batgirl and Batwoman are two entirely differently characters.

Batgirl debuted in 1961 and is the alter ego of police comission James Gordon’s daughter, Barbara Gordon. She is a sidekick to Batman and a superhero-in-training.

Batwoman was introduced in 1956 and is the alter ego of Kathy Kane, and a superhero in her own right. She was originally intended to be a love interest for Batman. In 2008, DC comics “reimagined” the character as a Jewish lesbian, and this is the current crappy version that the TV series is based on.

See my post #37. Batwoman and Batgirl are two entirely different characters in the Batman universe, they just happen to have similar names. It's like confusing Harry Byrd of Virginia with Robert Byrd of West Virginia.

We did see other adaptations of Batgirl though, mostly famously Alicia Silverstone is the otherwise wretched Batman & Robin from Joel Schumacher in 1997.

And Batwoman has been adapted previously as well, watch the direct-to-video animated film Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman (2003) if you want to see a GOOD version of the character. That was before DC corrupted her and turned her into a SJW heroine.

I will not be watching this schlocky TV series, though there is a related "Crisis on Infinite Earths" storyline on Supergirl in December (apparently Batwoman will tie into it but NOT be the main focus) that sounds like its worth checking out. They literally went back and got EVERY previous incarnation of live action Batman/Superman actors to show up and play versions of themselves from "alternate universes", even going so far to get Burt Ward (from the 60s Adam West series) back as Robin, and Brandon Routh (from 2006's Superman Returns) back as Superman. Technically he is playing the "Kingdom Come Superman" but he is basically doing the Christopher Reeve version of the character again.

Wish we had gotten that in a feature film instead of a crappy "Batman vs. Superman" movie.
