Major League Baseball’s remarkable home run surge has led to countless records being broken this season.
Now the biggest one has fallen.
When Jonathan Villar of the Baltimore Orioles launched a three-run home run during Wednesday’s 7-3 win against the Los Angeles Dodgers, it was No. 6,106 hit across MLB this season.
That breaks the previous record of 6,105 hit in 2017.

You’re seeing the inevitable consequence of catering to casual (at best) fans.
The ball is definitely juiced.
Previously ball used for major league and minor league games were different. Starting this year, the Majors and Minors use the same ball and yes Minor League homeruns really jumped up and are at record levels.
Which follows the old saying, "hit 'em where they ain't".

That's the the most annoying and stupid thing in baseball, this tendency to bat your home run hitter 2nd.
Christian Yelich was leading or a close 2nd in the league in average and homeruns before his injury, but he was only 10th in rbis. Why because the Brewers batted him 2nd most if the year.
Players like Tony Gywnn, Tim Raines, Pete Rose or Wade Boggs would never get a shot today.
Women have nearly always gone to the game just to please their spouse. Nothing new there except for the smartphone’s presence.
Yes, there are some female baseball fans, but not really very many.
The most rabid female fans are little league moms. Once the kids are out of LL, mom don’t care no more!
Steroids and the juiced ball are “kings” today.
Or is it actually “paupers,”
as compared to legitimate baseball?
Baseball is what it is.
Don’t blame the game for schools and the media foisting off soccer on every kid with two legs.
They tried it in my day and we (as students) told them to stuff it. After a week, they did.
Baseball was played off as being too dangerous. Soccer was supposed to be low impact. Soccer moms bought into it and today we have what we have, kids playing soccer and a heck of a lot fewer playing baseball.
In my day every kid was out playing sandlot. It’s what kids did. Today it’s soccer.
This was designed to be an attack on the nation’s pass-time. It’s working its magic.
You can look at it two ways. Many more games than most folks would suspect, have some sort of quirky thing happen that sets up a record or some sort of very interesting play.
The game is no more boring today than it was fifty years ago. It’s a relaxing time to spend with the family out having a good time.
Get the kids out from in front of a game console, and get them into the park.
Playing games on the radio, allows it to become a connection between you and your kids from their earliest remembrances.
That alone got me connected from an early age.
We lived on a farm with our nearest neighbors a mile away. The big metropolis was about a 400 person berg 4.5 miles away. My grandfather always had the game on, so as I transitioned from 3 o 5 to 10, I was connected to the sport.
People/times have changed, but it doesn’t take much to get kids interested and to follow the game as they grow older.

Leave your wife or girlfriend at home. If you have to explain to them what small ball is, you should have taken them to a movie.
Ladies, please calm down. I know there are exceptions. Generally, my wife included, she would rather go to almost anywhere other than a baseball game. She thinks they are boring.

You know what’s wrong with Basketball? Too much shooting and not enough passing the ball. Back in the day clean cut white boys used to pass the ball 8-10 times before taking a nice layup. Now it’s all dunk dunk dunk. I also don’t like the 3 point shot. Its killing the game. And what ever happened to the underhand free throw? :-)
Still, nobody has beaten the Seattle Mariners single season team record set in 1995.
I always thought that the 3-point shot was the worst thing that ever happened to basketball.
The main reason that I fell away from listening/watching MLB is because of the constant and unceasing movement of players from one team to another. Back in the old days, as a young boy, I easily memorized the entire starting lineup, positions and batting order, for the Detroit Tigers. At most, one player may be replaced by another over a couple (or a few) seasons, but that was easy. Even as a young Tiger fan, I could usually rattle off most of the starting line-ups for the teams that the Tigers faced most often.
When the players start having some loyalty and staying power with specific teams and the line-ups remain static for awhile, maybe it will become interesting again ...

What is legitimate baseball?
The sport has changed many times since it’s inception.
Guys back in the (19)30s didn’t have access to the training facilities we have today. Does that also make today’s baseball illegitimate to compare to teams back then?
We’re always going to have new technology being introduced. You can roll with it or get upset and start carping on the game.
I believe steroids have been addressed. Are they still being used by players, and players are being allowed to do it?
I admit that has been a very detrimental aspect of the game.
Players fought for free agency, and they got it. It destroyed folks ability to identify with the players and teams from season to season.
The guy you really like on your team the previous season, is gone. The new guy is a dud. He’ll be gone too in a season or two. And sometimes multiple players leave in a season.
It’s a mess. Not sure how to fix it either.
Ironic that the record was set with a 3 run homer. And by an Oriole.
