Hold up, diet soda drinkers. Regular consumption of soft drinks both sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened was associated with a greater risk of all causes of death, according to research published this week in JAMA Internal Medicine.
Participants who drank two or more glasses of soft drinks per day had a higher risk of mortality than those who consumed less than one glass per month.

Whenever you see the phrase “new study shows”, be skeptical of any claims made, very skeptical.

You can take off the /s. I think that’s a better guide to longevity than any diet. Be frugal and live long!

Regular consumption of soft drinks both sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened was associated with a greater risk of all causes of death So drinking soda will increase lightning strike deaths, homicides, IED roadside deaths abroad, suicides, automobile deaths and accidental hunting deaths. Who knew?

Do you remember past studies that concluded that drinking diet soda caused obesity? Their study concluded that almost all obese people drank diet soda, ergo, drinking diet soda causes obesity. It was nuts.

100% of people who drank water instead of soda died. They both contain high doses of Dihydrogen Monoxide.

Who drinks diet soda from a glass? It comes in cans for a reason! If you are at a restaurant or flying they bring you the soda in a glass. So the study really means that people who go out to eat twice a day and travel by air a great deal are at a higher risk of death.

Drinking carbonated water may be the problem.
Among the multitude of microorganisms in the body is an odd one found in many people, called an “Archaea”. While they look like bacteria, they are more closely related to people than they are bacteria, so much so that they form their own *Domain* of life.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archaea
For a time they were called “extremophobes”, because they were found in very inhospitable places, like near deep ocean volcanic vents. However, one kind can live in the human digestive tract. But why does this matter?
Unlike bacteria, Archaea consume things that bacteria won’t, like gases, and importantly, carbon dioxide.
Bacteria often *produce* carbon dioxide as part of their digestive process. It limits their growth, as it is toxic to them. But because Archaea can consume it, it allows bacteria to continue to digest food, providing more nutrition to the body.
And this may be how soda can hurt us. Its carbonated water is pure Archaea food. So we get more nutrition than we need, which leads to health problems.
