Lisa Stansfield, one of the best female pop singers ever. Today is the first time I've heard her voice. Amazing voice, God-given talent. I love great vocals, glad I discovered her tonight.
Sorry I’ve never heard of her and my tastes generally stopped in 1972. with about five or six exceptions.
Not for the pipes, although they are okay (not to everybody's ears) but for the musical creativity and execution.
There are a ton of ‘em from the 40’s too. Ella, Billy Holiday. 60’s Motown.
Other female singers with pipes.
Pat Benetar.
Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane)
Ann Wilson (Heart)
Stevie Nicks - lover her or hate her she had pipes
Although I must admit that Christina Aguilara is pretty amazing.
Adele from England and gales of laughter from me. But vomitus from my wife. When we hear the word “Hello” there is a dive for the mute button and a change of station. We are thankful she is not performing anymore but why does she still get airplay?
Pink is pretty good as well.
She’s was great before you were born
...
There are not very many ‘Lusty Lady’ style singers anymore who have the actual pipes for that sort of performance.
We used to have Shirley Bassey (Goldfinger!), Dusty Springfield (Natural Woman), Whitney Houston and her Auntie, Dionne Warwick, Linda Ronstadt and Melissa Manchester, to name just a few. I know Shirley is still with us, but the top of her career was some decades ago.
There seems to be less call to hear a mature woman singing.
At least for now.
When Lady Gaga doesn’t get lost in exaggerations of theater, just to make a spectacle, she has a voice, but she has been overexposed, and people are sorta tired of her now. She used to be the female Elton John, with costumes and props.
Bette Midler is still around, but I find it hard to separate her talent from her caustic, vulgar statements about anything conservative. Bette has a case of chronic TDS real bad.

Lisas album and movie Swing is great if you like Jazz. What a voice!
>>Neither one of us found what we were looking for :)
You, her, or Bono
Joni was incredible. Not for everyone, that’s true. But I liked a great deal of her work. Her voice as well.
Listen to ‘Ladies of the Canyon’. The left handed guitar chords she chose as an intro. The tempo is one of a person deeply breathing.
Then listen to her three part harmonies. All three vibrato match and are woven into one sound. Not an easy feat. Some artists are fully aware of their natural powers, and are the best judge in how to employ those abilities.
I’m in complete agreement with you.
Try these: Edie Gorme, the Queen of the Torch Song, with an unmatched set of pipes! Blow a house down just clearing her throat!

Enjoy. From one old fart to another.
I liked that. Surprised to find out Aretha did torch songs. Also surprised that she recorded for Columbia Records. I’m familiar, like most I suppose with her Atlantic recordings.
Here’s a terrific song by Aretha and a cast of dozens in what has to be the best music video of all time (no, I’m not exaggerating. If anyone can find a more entertaining music video, please let me know):

Or Julie London (before she was ‘Nurse Dixie’)
Karen Carpenter was that good, so was Olivia Newton-John. But Cleo Laine (click here) was one of the best, now 91 years old. I hope she can still entertain. I had an LP record of her songs, back in the early '70s, recorded when she was still younger. Her detailed Wiki bio is quite interesting.
But still, like the rest of us, just a sojourner. May Lisa have a happy life and a quality career in entertaining others.
That Cleo Laine vid was astounding. I don’t think I ever heard of her, but will be checking her out. Probably the most amazing thing I’ve heard yet tonight (despite the poor video and funky subtitles).
In fact I think that performance belies your claim that “it’s the score and lyrics that count.” It was her remarkable vocal performance that will (or, at least, should) be what is remembered.
