Lisa Stansfield, one of the best female pop singers ever. Today is the first time I've heard her voice. Amazing voice, God-given talent. I love great vocals, glad I discovered her tonight.
Tried it, didn’t like it. Weak voice, can’t seem to hold a note. Too much “vocal stylization” for my taste.
Most songs I hear on the radio nowadays from women all have nasally, weak and unappealing voices singing crap.
Maybe its just me....Im an old fart.
I would love to hear a latter-day Vera Lynn, Ruth Etting, Vaughn De Leath, Jane Green or Kate Smith.
Any FREEPERS listen to Amy Whinehouse? I don’t but I saw s special on her and she was pretty talented.
Here’s the Billie Holliday version. I much prefer it. Did not have the advantages of modern recording technology. She has a smokey raspy voice of a singer in a cheesy nightclub, but she could hold her notes:

Sorry you didn’t enjoy it. As a child I had Barbra Streisand’s albums, every one. No better vocalist of our day.
Also had Liza Minnelli, Aretha Franklin, Melissa Manchester, Diana Ross, Ronstadt, etc. So I’m very tuned in when I hear a great vocal. Lisa Stansfield definitely has it.
Someone else mentioned Adele. I’m late to the game on her also,,,just discovered her two years ago. But she too has one of the elite voices around. It’s the texture of her voice which makes hers one of the best in the world.
Give Adele a try. Ignore the brief “stylizations” if you can and listen to the quality of her voice. There’s only Streisand who has a better vocal texture than Adele. But for jazz, Adele is actually better than Streisand (though Adele doesn’t sing jazz as much anymore, sadly).
Good Morning Heartache, Lisa Stansfield's version:

Stansfield can certainly sing, and I thank you for introducing me to her, but I like Ella's version best. As usual.
Wiki: Rhiannon Giddens (born February 21, 1977) is an American musician. She is a founding member of the country, blues and old-time music band Carolina Chocolate Drops, where she is the lead singer, violinist, and banjo player.Shake Sugaree. The song may not be your cup of tea, but she has a magical voice and her classical training shows! The studio recorded version is better, but this live version is great. Ms. Giddens has the voice of an angel!Giddens is a native of Greensboro, North Carolina, an alumna of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, and a 2000 graduate of Oberlin Conservatory at Oberlin College, where she studied opera.
I always took it as a lame ripoff of Ramble On.
Nina Simon anytime
I checked out most of those. You go way, way, way back. I liked Vera Lynn. Gave up after the 1920’s recording of Vaughn De Leath.
This is the first Ive ever heard of her myself.
Eat a Peach. Great album.

Will listen to all the great music folks are posting here,,much thanks.
And since Aretha has been mentioned, have to post this great one she sang in the early 60’s and I would listen to over and over again on my turntable. One of my very favorites of Aretha, soaring vocal.

Great stuff! She is an amazing talent. Cant believe I missed her these past few years. I look forward to hearing more of her recordings.
I like that video, too!
Wow. Rhiannon Giddens, a name to remember.
Ella is smoothness. Always interesting to hear where she takes a song vocally. Great talent she was.
“Try her duet with Barry White. Priceless.”
Her soul sound is like Barry White. He was a big influence on her she says. Amazing how great she can sing that way. As they say, she is a “blue-eyed soul” singer...and one of the very best I’ve ever heard.
