You can freeze your credit. That way nobody can open accounts in your name. Just unfreeze it when you need a loan, then freeze it back.

I know of people who freeze their credit to avoid banks and creditors from reporting bad credit.

Yes, people are THAT stupid.

That is excellent advice! Folks, just be sure to do it for all three major credit bureaus. Here’s some helpful info:

Years ago I was notified by a law firm that, as a Blockbuster card holder, I was party to a class-action suit against the video rental giant. Somebody brought suit because of exorbitant late fees. I forgot about it until months or years later, I and all the other card holders got a coupon for one free rental. The lawyer got $16,000,000.

Read John Grisham’s “King of Torts” to get a deep and clear understanding of how class action lawsuits work ... for the law firms! Entertaining as well as informative.

Has anyone told AOC? or asked what she thought of this?

I keep my credit frozen
Too much hacking and misdeeds. Then I unfreeze it if I need it checked. Companies you already have accounts with can get the info

How do you think the settlement administrator is verifying if you are impacted?

Most credit card companies offer that service for free.

I applied but I doubt I’ll ever see it. Usually these things end up that every affected individual will get about $0.87 and the attorneys will share $32 million.

There was a class action lawsuit in a company I worked at years ago. It was about employees getting emails sent to them after working hours who would then feel compelled to respond to them. So the employees sued for the overtime they felt they were owed.

Really a BS action because the company never expected the employees to respond on their own time in the first place (or to even respond at all as most of the emails were just announcements).

Anyway, for months, as this dragged on, more and more employees signed on to this so that they could share in the "windfall".

Sure enough, the company settled and by the time the lawyers took their cuts, all the employees got a check for something like $155. When they were expecting thousands!

Then our IT department had to set up the email system so that hourly employees would not receive emails outside business hours.

There is only a check if you prove you already have monitoring. if you don’t already have monitoring you must take theirs and receive no check.

No current monitoring = no check

I took the $125. Equifax allowed themselves to be hacked, so why give them your ID again?

It’s not worth hundreds a year. I think with USAA I pay like 10/month for it...at most 12. So depending on where you get it ~$150.

I do it because I had some prior issues with identity theft. I keep getting offered additional because of everyone getting their data breached, but it’s not worth the additional hassle.

I’m sure they’re using the partial SS numbers to verify claimants.

But what will they do with that information once the settlement process is over?

If your information has been provided to the settlement administrator... your information has been breached.

Are you really that naive?

The way I read it, you could only file for the $125.00 if you have paid to have your credit monitored - otherwise you have to take 6 years of credit monitoring instead of the money.
