US Secret Service switching to 9mm Glock pistols

The United States Secret Service is moving forward with plans to outfit its agents with Glock 9 millimeter (mm) pistols to replace the agency's existing Sig Sauer .357-caliber duty weapons -- part of a larger move among U.S. law enforcement agencies towards the lighter, more efficient guns.

“The Secret Service has been one of the few agencies that has maintained Sig Sauer as a permanent duty weapon for more than 20 years,” said Donald J. Mihalek, a retired senior Secret Service agent and ABC News contributor.

The Secret Service and Glock declined to comment on the move, but a federal official with direct knowledge of the deal confirmed the agency's plan to switch to the Glock 9 mm pistols. Details of the new deal were recently posted on fedbizops.gov, the federal government's website for posting procurement opportunities above $25,000 for private sector companies.

The Secret Service -- whose primary mission is to protect presidents, vice-presidents and their families -- employs about 3,200 special agents, 1,300 uniformed officers and more than 2,000 other support personnel, according to its website.

"2. 9mm do not have the stopping power of a .45 cal etc."

I believe it was in 2015 that the FBI released an extensive multiyear study of handgun effectiveness. They concluded that the "stopping power" advantage of the .45 acp or 40 cal was a myth. Physicians could tell no difference between the wound channels of 9, 40 or 45. They determined that the biggest factor in winning a gunfight was the ability to fire quick, accurate follow up shots. The study determined that the 9 was better at this at all levels of shooting ability (ie. from their best to worst shooters.) Obviously this was due to the lower recoil of the 9. This is why the FBI went back to the 9 and why many police departments are too.

If you browse around on youtube you can find some comparison videos of 9mm vs other calibers. The new 9mm ammo is much better than it used to be and compares well with .357sig, .40 and .45 auto. The game has changed a lot. With 9mm you get good performance and less recoil and more rounds in the mag.

"The .357 Sig is around a grand, the Glock 9mm is around $600"

Also 9mm ammo is cheap. My rule on calibers is I only get what you can find ammo for cheap and plentiful at Wal-Mart. Heck, right now you can get 9mm and 5.56 ammo at Wal-Mart about as cheap as any place you can get it online. I can't reload either one as cheap as I can get it at Wal-Mart.

I am a 1911 aficionado. I have several, including a few compact Kimbers that are deadly and perfect for concealed carry.

I would not knock Glock. Good pistol.

But I cannot tolerate the grip angle. If you shoot a 1911 your whole life and pick up a Glock, point naturally at the target, you will find the muzzle is pointing upward due to the different grip angle.

Train with one of them and pointing to target becomes second-nature.

Mix your training and you will confuse your natural reflexes.

I continue to live in past. The .45 was adapted by the US Army to stop the Muslim crazies in the Philippines. Good enough for then, good enough for me.

I’m a die-hard Glock FanBoi, but I’m shocked, shocked I say, that the USSS isn’t piggybacking on the rock bottom pricing of the U.S. Army M17 and M18 contract.

Oh, you mean the guys who covered up Skankles perfidy and failure to safeguard state secrets and operated a coup to remove a duly elected President? Those guys? Who say we’re all operating under “conspiracy theories”? F them.

Yeah ... no... I don’t believe them.

My specialty for a few years was radioactivity, and the potential of biological damage to tissue.

9mm would be like the X-Ray or lower energy Gamma Ray.

.45 would be like a Beta Particle.

.50 would be like a big honkin’ Alpha Particle

If you feel comfortable with it and shoot well with it than by all means stick with it. Use what works best for you.

I’d like to have one. And a 7x57 Mauser, and a 6.5 mm Creedmoor, and a .50 Beowulf....I can only carry one when I hunt, so it’s usually a 30-06. Good to go from 30 feet to 300 yards.

I don’t trust the FBI either but this was an operational not a political issue and the study was well documented and made sense if you read it.

"Good to go from 30 feet to 300 yards."

Heck, a 30.06 is accurate out to 1000 yards if you've got the skill to shoot those distances. (I sure don't)

Overpenetration? Only with full metal case bullets. Modern hollow points all behave similarly in the standard self-defense calibres.

Stopping Power? All handguns suffer from similar problems. The stopping Power concept as described by Marshall and Sanow has been discarded. All handguns rounds are too slow to cause the same stop that is seen with rifle rounds.I

Handgun effectiveness is a complicated and multifactorial issue!

"I’m sure this won’t spark a big debate!"

Heh, I love this kind of thing...it lets everyone jump on their soap box of choice, but there usually isn't any real venom behind it...:)

Usually!

We had to ball ammo in the .mil. 9mm is a joke that way. Luckily I never had to depend on that thing as such.

Law enforcement should be required to use revolvers. .357 with a long barrel. Range time at least once every quarter.

I have a Garand, and due to my crappy eyes I can’t hit the broadside of a barn with a handful of peas, but...I just love shooting it!

I have three close friends who have them, and we went to the range together a few Memorial Days back to shoot together and when you shoot a few together, people notice.

It isn’t hard to understand why so many guys from that generation who shot them frequently or in combat ended up with hearing issues!

I can’t imagine the training ranges at boot camps where they had hundreds of people shooting them at the same time, never mind combat.

Sen. Blumenthal told us that if someone has ever lied, they can’t be trusted with anything. So that’s all there is to it.

EVERYTHING is political these days Comrade. Right down to whose palm gets greased filling multimillion dollar contracts.

I do love the 357. I would never give up my Ruger GP-100 with a 4 in. barrel. Or, uh, I mean I wouldn’t have until that boating accident. No other handgun feels as comfortable, natural and solid in my hand. They are just too big to carry concealed but are an awesome sidearm. The only issue is, are 6 rounds enough? That’s a decision each individual has to make.

Never understood the fascination with Glock, the seem rather ugly and expensive

Come on now. I bet you don't like AR-15's for the same reason. It's because they are black, isn't it? /Sarc
