'More popular than Jesus' | How one sentence changed everything for The Beatles

With one sentence, John Lennon changed The Beatles’ prospects in the United States.

In March 1966, the renowned singer sat down for an interview with The London Evening Standard.

“We’re more popular than Jesus now,” Lennon said during the interview.

The sentence alone appears to compare the band’s fame to Christ. But in full context, Lennon wasn’t attempting to say what would be regarded as a blasphemous and negative comment. Lennon simply stated that rock music, The Beatles in particular, were more popular in England than Christianity at that point.

“Some accounts have him becoming “born-again “ in the years prior to his death.”

Do a search for the lyrics to “Help Me To Help Myself,” one of his last songs. Hard to believe that song could have been written by an atheist.

Yes on both. I thought at the time he was just being his usual brazen, blunt self, calling it as he saw it, not bragging about it.

But I have never liked him, or loved The Beatles - and I hate “Imagine” with a passion.

Well, if you look at that CBN article (referenced above)the author writes that Lennon did have a born again phase but Yoko steered him out of it. The author concludes that
“Before he was murdered in 1980, Lennon embraced a universalistic belief of religion and no longer seemed interested in his born-again lifestyle.”
That’s probably correct, although only God knows his heart.

Well, that statement surely followed John Lennon to his death.

Interesting chain of events. What happens when demons are let loose?

The Dakota building in NYC, where Lennon was shot, had been the site of the 1968 film, Rosemary’s Baby. The movie is about a woman who is raped in a Satanic orgy and gives birth to the antiChrist.

That film was directed by Roman Polanski.

A year after Rosemary’s Baby was a smash hit, in August 1969, Polanski’s wife, 8 months pregnant Sharon Tate, is murdered by the Manson gang in Hollywood.

The demonic Manson murderers stab Tate so brutally, her boy baby is nearly sliced from her belly.

But the murders on Cielo Drive were of the wrong victims.
Manson’s gang intended to slaughter people who no longer lived there, not Roman Polanski’s wife & child

Roman Polanski fled the US in 1978 to escape imprisonment for statutory rape if a 13 year old gurk.

In 1980, Lennon is murdered at the site of Polanski’s 1968
film, Rosemary’s Baby.

I think “Imagine” has a beatiful melody but horrible lyrics. And it’s been influential, sadly.

Wherever Lennon is right now...wonder if he wishes he could take those words back?

Mark Chapman got John Lennon’s autograph and stuck around afterwards to kill him.

John certainly “Imagined No Taxes”, which is why he moved to the US from England.

Never liked those jerks. Music? What music? Just noise!

It’s good you have Gramps, with his (I suppose) well-worn stack of 45’s, to provide that perspective!

That stack is almost four feet high with some originals by the Beatles and other groups; Elvis is in there and Crash Cradock (whoever he was) and Jerry Lee Lewis and lots of 50’s/60’s stuff.
