NASA asteroid DANGER: A 2,700 MEGATON asteroid might hit Earth this October
Express (UK) ^ | 7/6/19 | Sebastian Kettley

AN ASTEROID with the destructive power of 2,700 megatons of explosive TNT risks slamming into the Earth later this year, NASA’s asteroid trackers have revealed.

The imposing asteroid, dubbed Asteroid FT3, will come barrelling past our home planet on October 3, 2019. NASA expects the flyby to mark the first of 165 approaches between 2019 and 2116. On any one of these asteroid flybys, the risk of cataclysm is low but should the asteroid veer off course and straight into Earth, the results could be cataclysmic. Asteroid FT3 is a monstrous rocky object measuring an estimated 1,115ft (340m) in diameter.

NASA further estimates the asteroid weighs an incredible 55,000,000,000kg.

If the asteroid were to ever hit the Earth, at the point of atmospheric entry, the rock would slam into the planet at 20.37km per second or more than 45,500mph.

The force of impact would likely be equal to 2,700 megatons of TNT or 2,700,000,000 tonnes of TNT.

[...snip...]

So, what are the odds of this asteroid striking the Earth in October?

Thankfully, the risk is incredibly low but it is not non-existent.

There is a small chance – about one in 11,000,000 – Asteroid FT3 will crash into us in the next three months.

The odds of impact translate into a 0.0000092% chance of cataclysm or a 99.9999908% chance the asteroid will miss Earth.

Odds of winning Powerball or Megamillions is 175,000,000

aka 175 Million

“”” Things That Are More Likely Than Winning the Lottery
If you believe in the odds of winning the lottery, then you should never fly or drive. You are more apt to be killed in a plane crash, where the odds are 25 million to one, and far more likely to die in a car accident, where the odds are only 5,000 to one.

Similarly, you should start sleeping on the floor. The odds of being killed by falling out of bed are 2 million to one. You should also take showers instead of baths. The odds of drowning while taking a bath are 840,000 to one. But don’t think you can improve your chances by avoiding cleanliness altogether. The odds of dying from flesh-eating bacteria are only 1 million to one.

Maybe you’ll have better luck outside. Not! The odds of being killed by lightning are 2 million to one while being mauled to death by a dog are 700,000 to one. Bring your anti-venom kit outdoors with you. You are even more likely to die from a snake bite or bee sting, where the odds are 100,000 to one.

If these statistics have you feeling a little paranoid, cheer up. Many good things are also more likely to happen than winning the lottery. For example, the odds of becoming a movie star are only 1.5 million to one. The odds of getting a royal flush in the first hand of poker are just 649,740 to one. Even better for guys, the odds of dating a supermodel are just 88,000 to one.

To put it all into perspective, consider this. Scientists have calculated that there is just a 300 to one chance that asteroid 2004 MN4 will strike the Earth on April 13, 2029. The asteroid is about a quarter mile, or 400 meters, wide. That is larger than the asteroid that carved out Meteor Crater in Arizona. It’s also bigger than the one that flattened thousands of square miles of forest in Siberia in 1908. “””

“Fat man” atomic bomb: 22 kt = .000022 gigatons (GT)
Chelyabinsk meteorite (2013): 300 kT = .0003 GT
Castle Bravo: 15 MT = 0.015 GT
Tsar Bomba: 50 MT = 0.05 GT
Tunguska event: 100 MT= 0.1 GT

This event here: 2,700 MT = 2.7 GT

KT-impactor (the “asteroid that killed the dinosaurs): 100 teratons = 100,000 GT

If this asteroid hits the earth, it’s going to leave a mark although it won’t cause mass extinctions.

The force of impact would likely be equal to 2,700 megatons of TNT or 2,700,000,000 tonnes of TNT.
The "Little Boy" dropped on Hiroshima was equivalent to 16,000 tons of TNT. Thanks BenLurkin for this nice graphic in another recent topic:

It all depends on where the impact happens, of course. Most of the Earth's landmasses are above the Equator. Even if there's not a mass extinction of whole taxa, as with the impacts that caused the paleontological boundaries, an impactor of 340 meters is, uh, serious, could destroy our technical civilization, and run our surviving asses off into a much earlier period of development.

That was a smart move too, those hurricane straps make all the difference when it comes to megaton sized over-pressures...

So, wouldn't that be 2.7 gigatons of TNT?

In 2013 the Chelyabinsk object blew up 26 kilometers above the surface, and this happened in Central Asia (not generally a lot of people around), and yet over 1,400 people were injured.
