Weekly Gardening Thread - June 22-28, 2019
June 22, 2019 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 06/22/2019 5:32:52 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

Our 'Greeneyes' has been FOUND, but she is STILL having computer issues, so I have been asked to keep the Weekly Garden Thread rolling until she returns.

That said, I will be posting once a week, and I will TRY to stick to her schedule of a Friday Night/Saturday Morning Weekly Post.

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

I’m just learning. I have mandevilla in a pot as well as a hanging bougainvillea. I’ve never had such healthy herbs either although they seem to poop out in early June which is weird for me as I come from the northeast. There, they poop out in later August.

I LOVE my spiralizer! I have the hand-held one from OXO. About $15. Bought it at The Container Store a few years ago. Worth every penny!

I checked my zukes - I have about 6 on, and a few had Blossom End Rot from all the @#$%^&*! RAIN we’ve had. I gave them all a shot of liquid bone meal, which will correct that problem.

You’re winning the war!

We’re having a HUGE problem with Wild Parsnip this year.

Thistles HURT, but these plants will make you break out in oozing BLISTERS.

Blech!

I’m growing Black Cherry this season, too.

My fave heirloom is Cherokee Purple for flavor, but this year I am trying a hybrid called Cherokee Carbon.

We shall see. ;)

A few garden pix to share today, then as soon as Beau is done icing his back (just muscle strain; he's been fencing) we are FINALLY going to get the Sugar Pie Pumpkins into the lower garden (which has been flooded!) and I have HUGE Sunflowers I've been keeping alive in pots to transfer to our Gamebird Food Plot to lure in the turkeys and pheasants and feed the songbirds.

Sugar Magnolia Peas planted in APRIL; just starting to bloom. Pea pod is purple, peas inside are green.

Sugar Pie Pumpkin starts and the Sunflowers which are both going in, today come h#ll or high water! Strawberry starts for a friend.

Lettuces are LOVING this weather - my tomato plants haven't grown more than an INCH since I put them in at the end of May. :(

Sunny, warm day today in SE Wisconsin (Zone 4/5) but more RAIN on the way for tomorrow. At least it's not SNOW!

I'm in Zone 6 - Upstate NY. We had lotsa rain and little sun. This week finally looks good....and I'm setting out 6 more tomato plants. Doing an experiment. Planting two rows (6 tomato plants) in a 4' x 5' plot. Planted 12 in a 4' x 20' plot. Want to see if the yield is effected by the space used.

So from what I see, 4' x 5' is 20 square feet while 4' x 20' is 80 square feet. Thus in plot #1 there is 3.33 S.F. per each plant while in plot #2 there is 6.667 S.F. per each plant. Sounds like a good experiment, but you would have to be careful to make sure they each have the same soil and moisture and sun. It would also help if they are all seeds from the same plant

Also picked up a Brix meter to test for sweetness

From what i read they come in different, with lower reading range being for plants.

I see that"°Brix is a measure of the Total Soluble Solid (TSS) content in the tomato or tomato product. The TSS in tomatoes is mainly sugars (fructose). A tomato juice, which is assessed as having 20 ° Brix, has 200g/litre of soluble sugars."

Then there is Brix Test – How To Use It In Your Organic Vegetable Garden

Also of interest, 10 award-winning cherry tomatoes

Thank God for His mani-fold grace. May we respond according to the benefit.

2 lbs sliced yellow squash, large onion, chopped teaspoon sugar 2 tsp salt softened butter, 4 beaten eggs 4 c shredded cheddar 2 c milk 4 c bread crumbs tsp cayenne parm METHOD Simmer tender combined squash, onion, sugar, and salt, water to cover; drain. Spoon into a bowl and mash. Add butter and mix. Stir/mix in eggs; add cheddar, milk, bread crumbs and cayenne. Spoon into buttered 8x8" baker, sprinkle with Parm. Bake brown and bubbly 350 deg 30 min.

Sounds yummy, thank God, although I would leave out the cayenne or jalapeno so that I do not have to call 911 for the fire dept.

Thanks for posting. We have had many rainy days here in Eastern MA, but which has enabled me to collect about 300 gals of rainwater in barrels, covered with mosquito netting .

Tomatoes are starting to show they have settled in to grow, thank God, though some are struggling (where the rain comes off the roof and floods it).

Before (May 7, when it was unseasonably cool )

Just use enough cayenne or jalapeno bits to “oomph up” the flavor.

With my DNA, even just a little of such means that about all i can taste is heat. But the hot stuff is good for you.

Everything, soil, plants, watering, grade... is the same except for the spacing.

I grew all the plants from seed.
