Thirteen middle-school-age girls are spending the week learning valuable skills as a precursor to possible careers in the construction industry.
The group will build and wire their own lamps, pour concrete and build a free library stand over the course of the week in a bid from the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) to recruit more girls into the industry early.
"There's just not a lot of talk about what opportunities are out there, and that's kind of our goal is to show the kids what else there could be," said Jordan Moore, a specialist at plumbing supplier Ferguson Enterprises and board member at NAWIC's Austin chapter.
Moore started in the industry when she decided she'd rather start her career than stay in college. She became a plumber's apprentice, going to clients' houses and working with her hands. "It was very satisfying work," she said, once she got past the initial double-take.

Yes, I agree strongly that trade classes (and less social activism fodder) should be offered in school, to both boys and girls. While I would never have made it as a plumber, I do wish I had some basic plumbing skills.
I don’t see anything wrong with girls going into construction trades, and am a bit disheartened by some of the remarks on this thread.
Never had any sons.
I do have two daughters though who are educated and have careers. If God forbid their marriages were to fall apart I at least would not have to worry about them paying the rent.
I’ve encountered too many women whose husbands up and left for a younger model sticking them with the kids and no income.
50? I remember 70 and 90 pounders.
Sometime before her 9th birthday, she decided she wanted to dress like a girl so nobody would get confused. She is the mother of two sweet little grandsons now and my son-in-law thinks it is pretty cool to have a wife who is proficient with hand tools.
I did not remember what the actual weight was...........
Just ask yourself: Are you more likely to slow down for some dude? Or a gal with nice jugs?
I remember job sites where OSHA required roped off edges, with someone monitoring them. The boss hired the crews’ girlfriends to stand around in shorts, getting a tan. Everybody wins.
Knew a guy that was a contractor in Cali, way back. Advertised for females. Get a tan and make much better money than babysitting. He was in high demand for the eye candy he brought to the job.
Good times.
They got heavier as the day wore on.
A contractor friend’s wife was bad- mouthing one of the crew one time. He was a slacker, for the most part, but when he was needed, he was really needed. He couldn’t make it one day, so she filled in. She talked a good game the night before, but was in tears before noon, and actually said “This is men’s work. “
A lot of work in the trades is made easy by automation and union rules. A lot of it isn’t.
Wrong type of lug wrench but who cares?
Amen to that! I’m trying to instill in my daughter the fact she needs to be able to take care of herself and any children she has just in case she finds herself in the situation where she has to. Women also need to be able to do somethings around the house other than cooking and cleaning. Even though my daughter is only 10 she knows how to apply and sand drywall, paint, how to use a hammer, and a screwdriver.
I carried hod one summer in High School. That is a job I wouldn’t wish upon my worst enemy. You end up sore in places you didn’t know you had and then get sore upon the sores. The hod eats skin too. It was a bitch but I stuck it out. A woman that can do that job is tough as nails. A barbie that can do that job is marriage material especially if you are a farmer. If your tractor breaks down you just hitch her up in front of the plow and keep going.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. Women with little kids should be at home with them. Unfortunately, we’ve created an economy where many women have no choice.
Better that than your daughter wanting to get a useless degree in Gender Studies or some other such crap.
There's nothing wrong for trade schools for females who don't have the ability to go to college and get a legitimate degree in the essential STEM degrees...........
The best is eating lunch at the roach coach.
Pulling wire is freaking hard ass work.
