Deaf woman concerned over note from Portland drive-thru

PORTLAND, Maine — When Vera Mauro comes to a drive-thru, she’ll usually keep driving toward the window. Mauro is deaf and uses American Sign Language to communicate. She typically writes her order down on paper, but on Tuesday, her usual pattern didn’t work when she stopped for a drink at a Portland Dunkin'.

“The woman didn't exactly see me, so I used the horn. Yet she ignored, texted on her phone and made another person's drink, and when she came back, I held up the order on the paper. She saw that I had it, gave me an attitude,” said Mauro.

In return, she received a note asking her to start using the inside storefront and to not use the drive-thru.

Mauro explained that she found the note to be offensive and tried to reach out to the store about it several times. The location manager responded to her in an email, offering a gift card and asking her to remove her post from Facebook.

“That was not enough,” said Mauro

Yeah. I’m surprised the ADA doesn’t have drive thrus installing key pads for orders.

That would be better for all of US, considering the speaker systems and the idgits on the other end.

Little did Mauro know that the restaurant employee was blind and couldn’t read her note...

Yes. They should.

Just for fun, I’m going to check out a local Dunkin’.

It was built in the past few months, so it should be pretty up to date on stuff like this.

I’ll report back.

I’m sure not all details are in the story, but it says she just stopped for a drink, which I assumed was a coffee. How complicated can reading a note and passing over a coffee be?

Oh, really.

So, minimum wage guy is just supposed to psychically know that the individual holding up the high traffic throughput of the drive through is deaf and not your usual asshat being the usual asshat.

When the asshat deaf individual could, instead of being an asshat deaf individual could adapt to the situation and get his/her ass out of the car and go inside where sign language is much more readily apparent.

Everyone has to pander to the extreme.

Next thing you know, passengers on commercial airplanes will be getting attacked in their seats by “emotional support dogs” because some piece of shit just has to be special...

Oh wait, that’s already happening.

There’s accommodating, then there’s farming for offense.

What the asshat deaf woman is doing is farming for offense.

Just like the queers that went bakery shopping until they found one they could pretend to be offended by so they could sue.

If you had been blind from birth or for many years, I don’t doubt that you could smell where the restroom is and which sex uses it.

It’s against the law in my state to wear headphones while driving because it restricts your hearing.

i don’t get why people assume the employee was a bad actor here. Maybe if we saw the footage we’d understand what really happened

The ADA requires public services to make "reasonable accommodations." If the restaurant doesn't want to support deaf people driving up to a microphone, a reasonable accommodation is to post a sign that says, "we ask our deaf or hearing impaired customers to come into the lobby, where they'll receive better service."

That's a reasonable accommodation; she isn't being denied service, and she's told what the remedy is.

To EXPECT a business to accommodate you in the way you demand isn't required by the law, or even by common sense. If she finds this unacceptable, she needs to go somewhere else. The world doesn't owe her the treatment she demands.

The ADA requires reasonable accommodation.

For a deaf or hearing impaired person to believe that a system that relies primarily on a speaker or microphone to handle their needs is not reasonable.

A reasonable accommodation is to ask her to come into the lobby, which they did. The ADA does not require a business to meet the requirements of every person who makes a demand.

You are utterly ignorant of the law.

ADA is federal law, it’s not getting ‘slapped down’, geeze, how ignorant can a person be?

So quit your bitching and deal with it. Bwahahahah

At *any* establishment, if there is doubt as to if you mistreated the customer, indeed if the customer ‘feels’ or perceives that they’ve been mistreated, you had better have camera footage and/or numerous eyewitnesses to back up your side, or you’re toast.

Perception is reality in retail customer service. Yeah, there are the customers who are psychotic or merely unpleasant, or difficult, but unless you, as an employee or franchise owner have incontrovertible PROOF the customer was VERY wrong, you’re hosed.

Now, I ask myself, “If I am blind, how do I know that sign is there on the wall?”.............................

That's what I always ask. We had braille on the bottom of every interior sign in my old office. A blind person wouldn't even know the sign was there, let alone that it had a very small area at the bottom with braille.

It's funny though, nobody at my office saw the irony in those signs, they all thought it was a kind and good thing to do. Even though there were no blind employees nor were there likely to be any.

I am deaf so I’m going to take the time to educate you. It is not that simple to make us hearing just like that, you have to have an operation to get a cochlear implant. Right now it gives you “robotic” hearing and it does not replicate natural hearing. Yes, our technology is improving but we are not quite there yet. Maybe in 20 years. Thank you for reading my post.
