Deaf woman concerned over note from Portland drive-thru

PORTLAND, Maine — When Vera Mauro comes to a drive-thru, she’ll usually keep driving toward the window. Mauro is deaf and uses American Sign Language to communicate. She typically writes her order down on paper, but on Tuesday, her usual pattern didn’t work when she stopped for a drink at a Portland Dunkin'.

“The woman didn't exactly see me, so I used the horn. Yet she ignored, texted on her phone and made another person's drink, and when she came back, I held up the order on the paper. She saw that I had it, gave me an attitude,” said Mauro.

In return, she received a note asking her to start using the inside storefront and to not use the drive-thru.

Mauro explained that she found the note to be offensive and tried to reach out to the store about it several times. The location manager responded to her in an email, offering a gift card and asking her to remove her post from Facebook.

“That was not enough,” said Mauro

ROFLMAO!!!!!!!

I had been home due to a head injury for about 5 or 6 years.
(the 2 year recovery window is VERY OUTDATED and you CAN keep getting better in some cases)

I became one FAT #### over that time! :)

I finally got DOWN to 300 :) and was able to go to Las Vegas.

I had to get a first class seat, which was actually pretty cool.

It didn’t bother me in the least that they didn’t have 5 or 6 fat #### seats in coach :)

It’s not my world with everyone living in it.

I was gonna say “everyone revolving around me” but that just leaves me open to WAY too many fat jokes :)

But go ahead anyway...I laugh hardest of all at them!

I am under 300 but still need to lose 50 more so I don’t smother others in coach :)

There is a sign on the wall of a business near me that has ‘Restroom’ and an arrow pointing in the direction of the restroom. It also has Braille underneath it. Now, I ask myself, “If I am blind, how do I know that sign is there on the wall?”.............................

Except they have their own language that few hearing people know. In many ways they do have their own culture.

Issn’t it dangerous to walk up to a drive-thru window? I know the bank near me doesn’t allow walk ups

If you’re like me you feel extra safe when there are deaf drivers on the road who can’t hear horns, emergency sirens, etc. or even to get a better ambient sense of cars around her.

Ironic that this woman used her horn and got annoyed when no response was forthcoming.

I worked with deaf people for many years. I found a lot of them somewhat defensive because people were so often impatient with them. It’s just a psychology that many develop.

Most of them were very nice, gentle people; but they often seemed to anticipate unpleasantness, and be ready for it, because they encountered so much of it.

This reminds me of the blind woman on “Night Court.” She was the meanest most obnoxious woman one could ever meet. Judge Harry asked her boss if she became biter after being blinded. Turns out before she was blind she was worse.

The best thing to happen with quick service restaurants is the availability of ordering through an App or Kiosk. It’s less likely to result in an incorrect order, and there’s this: I hate using the drive-through (other than Chik Fil A).

The drive through often has bad sound quality, I hate yelling at the microphone, it’s irritating when the drive through guy talks over me, and I can’t stand it when there’s a language barrier.

Why would anyone purposely create an uncomfortable or difficult situation when there’s a simple alternative?

Exactly. I consider the deaf woman to be along the lines of a professional victim, or just trying to make a case for something.

Disabilities cause people to make changes to their life style to get along with others and have fewer stressful events in their life. She’s deaf, not crippled. She can use the storefront.

Disability Rights Maine provides services for those who are deaf and shared that under the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title III requests any business comply with reasonable accommodations.

What you said is highly possible. OTOH, one needs to define "reasonable accommodations." Passing note at an order window for a freaking simple coffee is a reasonable accommodation. Even if the line is long. If it is a long and complicated order, then maybe not so much. Parking and walking in with the order would be the appropriate action if the order is complicated.

She is not asking the service clerk to read ASL or take an order in a foreign language. That would be crossing the line just as much as a long and complicated order. And, yeah, there are people like that.

When I was a resident of Japan, I was behind an American visitor who was having problems communicating her order to the local employee making her Subway sandwich. Instead of slowing down her speech, the moron just increased her volume. While I was thinking "What a numbnut!", my daughter who was with me, stepped in to translate. Bottom line: Respect is a two way street.

Starbucks has software for the hearing impaired at its drive thrus.

Why not just use a Starbucks?

Or get out of the car?

Or use Dunkin’s app to order?

“Why not just use a Starbucks?”

Because, Dunkin’ coffee is way better.

It’s not complicated unless there’s a liability issue involved.

It would help to know if that’s a concern for the biz.

FWIW, I don’t patronize Starbucks. But if the local shop has that software setup for the hearing impaired to use, that would be a great argument to go there.

And if Dunkin doesn’t have something like that for its franchises, it should.

You could not be more wrong.

Like it or not, the Americans with Disabilities Act is law, everywhere.

ADA requires businesses to make proactive steps to accommodate when their systems are not able to meet the law.

I’ve owned several businesses and I’ve found to make good business sense, even when compliance has cost money out of pocket.
