The Health Ministry in Fiji said an investigation into the cause of death is ongoing.
"Influenza has been ruled out, and at this stage, we do not believe there is a risk to the public," the Fiji Ministry of Health said in a statement released on Tuesday. "It would be premature to speculate further on the cause of death until the investigation is complete."
Five people, including medical staff who came in close contact with the couple at the clinic where they were treated and both died, have been quarantined and are being monitored at a hospital in Nadi, Fiji, as a precaution.
The Health Ministry said those under observation are all "currently well."
Medical staff at the Nadi Hospital told ABC News that relatives of the five people under observation are not being allowed to visit them.
A spokesperson for the World Health Organization, or WHO, said in a statement on Tuesday the agency is "providing access to laboratory and other technical services in Australia" to analyze specimens taken during autopsies of Michelle and David Paul.
"We are working closely with the Ministry, the CDC and our partners," WHO's statement reads.
A Fiji Health Ministry spokeswoman would only confirm to ABC News that blood samples from the couple were sent to a laboratory abroad for testing and the results could come back as early as the end of this week.

The tourists in the DR had all had a drink from the mini bar. Very suspicious, in my opinion. A Colorado couple is also saying they got violently ill from what they learned later after tests was a pesticide sprayed on plants at the same resort (the Grand Bahia Principe La Romana). I can’t imagine anyone actually going to the DR much less to this specific resort after the news reports.
They were poisoned just like the woman who died a few days before at the same ‘resort’. The bar where the drinks were mixed should be the FIRST place a competent cop would look for clues.
Neglected to add, poisonings were in Dominican Republic just like the couple in Fiji.
Sounds like a fun vacation
Q: What did the sea monster say after eating Fiji?
A: I want Samoa.
I think Fiji has a reputation as a tropical paradise, like Tahiti. It ain’t.
Conspiracy? Jesus? Truth?
I just come here for the sexy pictures of AOC.

Ugh. NO.
Reread that paragraph about the couple and the medical staff. I believe it meant the couple dying — not the medical staff.
‘We have been throwing up for 8 hours’
I once threw up for eight years and then Donald Trump miraculously cured me!
Contagion = great film.
Excellent!
Ive been to 54 foreign countries and never got sick. I believe they drank the water. Idiots.
I just stick mostly to vacations in Florida and Hawaii. Sometimes Vegas. Or a campsite up in Maine or New Hampshire. Have no desire to go to exotic lands.
No medical staff died. They were/are quarantined but are well and healthy.
That may have been the fumigation fiasco.
Should never have been done. The fumigation seeped into the room above. The survivors were about dead and will never recover.
FYI, fumigants for pest contol kill any living cell, even plants.
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
“...We have been throwing up for 8 hours...”
Sounds like a dream vacation to me...pay thousands of dollars to fly for 18 hours then puke out your liver, gall bladder, shoes etc then croak.
Rotavirus is nasty: in 2015, there were two billion cases of gastroenteritis, resulting in 1.3 million deaths globally.
It literally could be something they ate. I would think that’s the most likely explanation. Or bad drugs.
“We have been throwing up for 8 hours...”
No wonder they got sick with all that puke in their stomachs.
I used to be down to dry heaves after about a half hour. Sort of a primitive cleanse before an upper GI barium procedure.
