Memorial Day marks the unofficial start to summer and sweltering heat will have a firm grip on the Southeast through and beyond the extended holiday weekend.
While there will be little rain to aid firefights and to impact holiday festivities, residents will have to take the necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
Temperatures will soar into the middle and upper 90s through Memorial Day in Montgomery, Alabama; Atlanta; and Tallahassee and Tampa, Florida.
Highs near or above the century mark will continue to bake Columbia, South Carolina; Augusta and Savannah, Georgia; and Jacksonville, Florida.

Actually, fairly standard weather for coastal Georgia. If we are going to have 100 deg temps in a year, it’s gonna be May/June, not July/August.
I am sitting in the cabin of our un-air conditioned sailboat in the St. Simon’s Marina, Brunswick, Ga. It’s about 89 degrees in here, but, we have fans going and the Indy 500 is on. The Coca-cola 600 is tonight. The wind is blowing off the ocean, so, it’s bearable. It’s been cool at night.
Hoping soon to be heading further north all the same.
Temperatures are well below normal in northeastern PA too. We’ve had nighttime temps as low as the mid-30s over the past few weeks, although usually in the low-40s.
64 degree high and rain for the day before memorial day here in sacramento.
Way way below normal. And the snow falling in sierras will provide skiing well past the 4th of july.
Where I grew up in Western India, hottest months were May-June, just like you mention in coastal Georgia. Monsoons arrived in July and cooled it off. When I arrived in US, it was at first strange to me that July-August were hotter in mid-west.
Just got finished mowing the yard in south Alabama. Its freaking hot, just like it is every summer. Fortunately, its going to cool off. In November.
98 degrees here at 12:00 noon in South Alabama. 53% humidity...
>>Actually, fairly standard weather for coastal Georgia.<<
Yes, this only seems unusual for people who aren’t from the South.
Just the thought of temps around 100 with a monsoon wind makes me glad I am in Wisconsin.
It is not 98 degrees 24/7 ANYWHERE. There is a period shortly before and after sunrise where the temperatures are MUCH more temperate. Do all your outside stuff then, so you may enjoy the shade and fans the rest of the day.
And that is WHY God invented air conditioning. You think anyone would live in Florida year-around otherwise?
It is 94 right now in the Florida Panhandle. Will probably get a degree or two higher.
In the house I grew up in near DeFuniak Springs, we had a house which was built to handle the heat. A two foot space under the floor, high ceilings, large windows with screens, large oaks for shade.
It was not bad at all.
The house I am in now would be awful without AC.
Well the positive thing about a 90°+ heat wave in May and June is that it dramatically shortens the grass cutting season in Upstate South Carolina.
OMG!!! HORRORS, HORRORS, I live in east TN and it’s OVER 90 at the start of summer. What are my poor dogs and I going to do? We even mowed the lawn two days ago WHEN IT WAS OVER 90. Call Mother Theresa, Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton, MAYBE THEY CAN HELP.
It’s only because it’s so early that it is unusual. And in middle Tennessee it is very dry with no break in sight.
94 in East Central Alabama. Probably climb 2 to 4 more degrees by mid-afternoon. But not too unpleasant with only 40% humidity, which is pretty low for this area.
(1970s) Ahhhh! New ice age! We’re all gonna DIE!
(2000s) Ahhhh! Global warming! We’re all gonna DIE!
(2019) Ahhhh! Climate change! We’re all gonna DIE!
That was a very hot summer and I remember still being down there (in Alabama) when Elvis died. A big deal was made of that, the local radio stations played Elvis day and night for a while.
I loved Alabama though. Even though every single day was hot as hell. I used to like to see the thunderheads forming on the horizon just about every day and at least half the time, a severe thunderstorm would roll on through. I liked thunderstorms and hoped that they would come every day. There were even a few tornado watches and warnings but never did see one.
Another memory of that summer was that my cousin and I would sit on the front porch with BB guns and try to shoot the mailbox which was about 50 yards away on the dirt road. I used to like hearing that satisfying ping of hitting the mailbox, which by summer's end, was pockmarked with little dents. My grandmother didn't mind. She'd come out periodically with iced tea and cornbread. So good. We also used to have June bug killing contests. We'd take a broomstick handle and would take turns trying to whack them out of the air. We killed a lot of June bugs that way but never seemed to make a dent in the population. There were a lot of June bugs.
I used to winter over at that marina, dock left of club house out at the end. Sorry we missed each other.
45 ft Morgan CC.
SS Island, SS BBQ...great food
If that ain’t proof of climate change I don’t know what is LOL! Remember that stupid movie Al Gore put out “An inconvenient truth” and he showed the photo of a mountain in Italy? One photo showed the mountain with snow, and the next photo showed the same mountain only with less snow and he blamed it on global warming until someone pointed out the first photo was taken in the winter and the other was taken in the summer LOL! Hey we have to ban the seasons, they are causing climate change!!!
